I like the design of the 5th Generation, but I still love my 3rd Gen. :snacker: I like the interior room of the 5th Gen. When the price comes down I would get a Dark Grey or Blue Trail Runner Edition to replace my 3rd Gen. Sport Edition.

I'll be driving :driving: my 4th Gen. for at least 10 years! So, the earliest I'd get new one would be the Fall of 2017. 20 years would be great, but I don't know if I could go that long without "upgrading", ..we'll see!

The more I see the 5th gen, the more it grows on me...except for that damn antenna and non-locking gas door. Come on Toyota, it's not that expensive for a locking gas door and an antenna in the window (actually, there is a spot on the roof of the car for satellite radio...why can't they use that for the radio), is it?

I'm addicted to the V8 in my 4th gen, even though it's only 2WD. I test drove a 5th gen before buying my 4th gen used, and I almost pulled the trigger, but once I drove the V8 model I ended up getting I was sold on the truck for literally half the cost of a new 5th gen.

When I look at what other practical options are out there to replace my 4Runner when the time comes, however far off that is, there aren't many options without going up to a huge SUV like a Sequoia or something horrible and American and full-size like a Tahoe.

The Pathfinder may be an option, but the current model Pathfinders are long in the tooth even compared with the 4th gen 4Runners and are long overdue for a redesign.

So when the time comes, I'll likely evaluate the latest 4Runner with the latest Pathfinder. Bonus points to whichever one offers a reasonable V8 option -- more bonus points to whichever one has a turbo-diesel in it (hahaha, not likely).

Not big on 5th gen styling overall, but they do ride really nice and with a lift+tires, they look pretty good.

I don't mind the radio antenna or the non locking gas door. But I can't get past those bug eye looking headlights and tail lights. Why can't they be smooth with the metal and not have to stick out like that. It's ugly.

I agree...that's the biggest turn-off for me (especially the taillgihts). But it's easy enough to fix if Toyota designers decide to get their heads back on straight for the mid-generation update.

The worst part of the 5th gen is the rear area of the body. It looks straight off a mini-van. Maybe a custom bumper would beef it up a bit. They look a lot better lifted than stock as well. The locking fuel door is kind of nice to have but when you think about it, they're not that strong of a lock anyway. If someone is going to steal your gas or put something in it then they probably won't care if they tear up your locking 4th gen gas door anyway. You can always get a locking cap for peice of mind but they're not that tough either. I like the 4wd system on the 5th gen better because it has a lever or stick for the 4wd. I only use 4wd when the roads are real bad anyway so not having the torsen center diff. doesn't bother me at all. Going back to the mast antenna is retro but ugly although maybe more functional. That all being said, I would trade my 4th gen for a 5th if the deal was right. Actually, the mother-in-law has been eyeballing our 4th gen so if she gives me the right amount of coin then I may just spring for a 5th gen. Hopefully a TE.

And it's not love-hate. to the rest of the world (i.e. people who don't post on 4th 4r internet forums), the 5th gen looks a lot better than the 4th gen. There's nothing controversial about its design. it's more rugged, more 3rd gen than 4th gen.

that's a good thing.

but the 4th gen has what the 5th gen does not.... that awesome v8. we'll see what toy does next. i doubt that they'll bring a v8 to the 4r though given the focus on efficiency.

i dont even really have to try because it's the truth. look at the evidence. it speaks for itself. 5th gen > 4th gen. i don't understand why some of you have such a hard time accepting this truth. buy the newest you can afford. you guys make it sound the 4th gen has some special magical powers or something.

And buying the newest your can afford is another completely silly statement. I could afford to go buy a new 2011 Limited and pay cash. But I won't. Why? Simple--because I like the styling (and 4wd system) much better on my 4th gen. You seem to be hung up people driving the latest vehicle available. Well, using that silly logic, it's time for you to trade in that 2010 and get a nice new 2011 (that is of course if you even own a 2010)

i'm not hung up at all. i *have* a 2003 model. it's a v8. i also have a $100K weekend car that i bought... what? with cash. why do i drive a $16K 2003 4R? because i find great value in it. until i can afford to drop another $90K or so on a newer G55 AMG, i'm totally cool with stashing the cash and being happy with my Limited. it gets the job done. and u know what... a jeep XJ would get the job done, too, if we're really going to get down to the nitty gritty.

subjective/objective values considered... the 5th gen > 4th gen. it is what it is. it's hard for you to believe but toyota does have highly paid engineers in charge of improving the breed and they did that with the 5th gen.

this is not to take away from the 4th gen because it's a commuter truck. it's a mass produced truck. it depreciates because there's always newer, better. value equation aside, again, the 5th gen is superior to the 4th gen along both the qualitative and quantitative fronts.

And as far as improving the breed....that's funny too because there are numerous threads on how much cost-cutting was involved in the transition from 4th to 5th generation.

Actually, you're wrong once again. At this point in time, the average 4th gen has already passed its highest rate of depreciation. If anything, it's the guys with the 5th gen that are experiencing higher rates of depreciation. Maybe you don't understand that either, but I'm certainly not going to explain it to you.

don't you see that this 4th to 5th gen transition is nothing new? it's the same thing that occurred from 3rd to 4th. it happens all the time. your hair splitting over features/functions is a repeat of what always occurs when the newer/better model comes along.

i'll keep the debate very simple instead of trying to venture off into personal finances, depreciation curves... all SIMPLEton stuff that you guys bring up to make you sound like you're smarter? LOL

5th gen is a better made, improved upon truck than the 4th gen both in looks and in features. period. end of story. when you bring finances into the debate, it gets way too personal/complicated to have any sort of worthwhile internet debate.
