4th Gen Head gasket Part Numbers

Hi guys,

I hope that you are all doing well. I have a 2004 4Runner with the V6 (1GRFE). I suspect that I have a bad head gasket (loosing coolant, rushing waterfall sound behind the dash, failed spark plug coil pack on cylinder 6, etc).

My mechanic recommended that I replace the coil packs since the truck is 20 years old... I replaced them with new Densos. It's no longer misfiring, so that's good.

Even though I changed the coil packs, when starting the truck, it bogs down for about 4 to 5 seconds and then it runs fine.

I am seriously considering replacing the head gaskets on the truck but would like to verify the part numbers. I have the following info from the Toyota parts website:

Can someone confirm that these are correct? I am assuming that one goes on the left hand side and the other on the right?

Also, is there anything else I should order? The intake manifold gasket was replaced last year, so we are good there.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Replacing the head gaskets is a big job that requires replacing a lot more gaskets and seals than just the head gaskets. I would really urge you to verify that the head gasket is leaking before you take this on, either by using a borescope to look for coolant in cylinder 6 or any of the other methods that will confirm your issue.

If you do need to replace the head gaskets, zguy1 did it recently and has a thread with a ton of great info. You'll want to order the Valve Grind Gasket kit from Toyota, it has every gasket and seal you'll need for the job. You will still need to buy a lot of other parts and tools though.

Replacing the head gaskets is a pretty well documented procedure now with threads on here and some good videos on Youtube. Check out these resources and confirm your gaskets are leaking before you order any parts.

My truck never ran any differently or set any codes while the head gasket was leaking. Maybe mine wasn't far enough along to do so. I would suggest renting a coolant pressure tester from a place like Autozone. This way you can pressurize the system and borescope the cylinders. I would only feel comfortable saying it is a head gasket issue if I can visually observe the coolant leaking or sitting on top of a piston. Just my thoughts...
