4th Gen: How did you plug the holes in the wheel well?

I ordered the big plugs from the dealer...worked nice...I also ordered some smaller plugs that unfortunately didnt work, but not to worry, I'm going to stop tonight and see what other ones they have available...I'll keep ya posted...btw, since the package comes with 4, I have 2 left if anybody wants them...

I used those plastic fasteners that are used to hold the door and other panels in place. The come in different sizes and shapes. They look like a thumb tack, all you do is push them in the hole.

are those the plugs from home depot or the dealer?

Neither. The pict above is a push-in fastener you can buy at any auto parts store.

I found a plug (rubber) at Advance Auto Parts for the small holes...perfect fit...you have to go under the fenderwell and pull it through with pliers. Part #45623 by Body-Tite. You guys can thank me with beer.

Just to update:
I replaced the foil tape I originally used with stainless steel nuts, bolts and fender washers.

Has anyone tried plugging the oval holes with the rubber covers that are used to plug drum brake adjustment holes? From the pics given the oval holes look just about the same size as the adjustment slot on my Tacoma's drum bakes. They should be available at any auto parts store for cheap $$.

I like the way a 3+ year old post lives on....

So I was at Home Depot and remembered this thread, began to look through plumbing supplies for the plugs, then remembered another product that I thought would do just the trick.

It's called "Protectowrap" and it's a 4" wide rubber membrane used to seal the flashing around windows during home construction. One side is super adhesive, with a plastic peel off sheet to expose the adhesive...I remembered that I had part of a roll left at home from a small remodel/repair job. So headed home, and pulled out the roll, cut off a foot or so, and got prepped to seal up those holes... problem was, the stuff was so old that the plastic wouldn't peel off!

Talked to a home builder buddy of mine this morning...He has tons of the stuff on his jobs, so I'm going to grab some and seal up these holes before I take the 4Runner up to Colorado next month...

Plugs for the 2 larger holes can be found at Lowes, or any parts store carrying the complete Hillman fastner line.

Hillman 9/16" Nylon Hole Plugs, Black, quantity: 2.
SKU: 0 0823671674 0; Hillman # 881283; Lowes # 139460.

I dabbed a little LEXAL sealant on the rim before installing them. Perfect fit.

Total cost for 2 plugs: $1.04 + tax

And the thread lives on. Just purchased the two Toyota plugs and the ones from Advance Auto parts. Work great. Thanks to you all. This is the type of mod that I'd never figure out on my own!!!

I know this thread is really old, but I thought this might help someone.

From the same section I used SKU: 0 0823671666 5, H#881275, Lowes #139449. 1/4 inch plugs. See on Lowes website.

They fit a little lose, about the same as the lager 9/16" plugs do in the bigger holes.

Damn, I noticed these holes only now when they started going rusty. Wish I paid attention in 2008 LOL.

Thinking to clean them up and plug with a squeeze of engine silicone. But, does anyone know why they are there and why Toyota leaved them open?!

Another thanks for posting about them holes Toyota just left open never noticed them, just using metal tape was a quick pluging.
