4th Gen Smoker's Kit Install

Can someone point me to a thread on Smoker's Kit installation?

Thanks!

There might be an install writeup around...but seems like it should be a 5 min swap. Based on taking apart my console, you'll have to undo a couple electrical plugs, and unscrew a couple screws (phillips head I believe). If you have the part in hand already, I recommend just pulling the console panel and looking at the bottom and the new part...the process should be pretty apparent.

Hope this helps - if I knew of a 'writeup' i'd link it!

Installation took 5 minutes and did not require any tools. You open the center console and then just lift/pop out the trim around the shifter which contains the ashtray. Unplug the power socket and lift the trim piece away. The "ashtray" with the power outlet has four clips and you just pop it out from the trim piece.

The new ashtray has two sockets. If you look at the socket on the wiring harness which you unplugged, there should be another socket taped to it, out of the way. Remove the tape so it's loose too.

Snap the new ashtray module in the trim piece. Plug in the two sockets from the wiring harness. One is bigger than the other so it's VERY obvious which plugs into which socket in the ashtray. Then you just pop the trim piece back into place and you're done.

It literally took me longer to type this than it did to swap the two pieces out. (I suck at typing though ) :pound:

Thanks, I just haven't taken apart any of the dash yet because I just bought this baby 2 months ago. So, I'm trying to make sure I get it right.

For anyone that has installed the smokers kit, how big is the storage compartment? I have the standard storage compartment with one outlet and I typically use the compartment to store my phone (iPhone 5s) while driving. Will my phone still fit in the smaller compartment on the smokers kit?

Thanks for the links. Still just wondering if my phone will fit in the small compartment of the smokers kit...

it definitely won't, the area which is designated as an ash tray isn't very wide or long, but however is fairly deep, but cannot hold a phone

New member, been reading tons but can't start a thread yet, so apologies for the old reply. (it's probably a dumb question anyway, but I can't figure it out)

I have a 2005 limited 4runner black ext, grey interior.

I want the smokers kit, but they only sell black from what I can tell. Is the center console color the same in all the 4runners for this part of the assembly? I want to make sure I get something to match.

I then want to replace the cigarette lighter with one of these to hook into my new radio to run airplay. Any idea if this will fit?

I ask because some people complained all of these type need 1.1" and the normal opening is 1". I can't tell how tight the fit is in the smokers kit pictures and if the cig lighter could be easily swapped out. I'm willing to dremel a little if I have to, but I'm going for as close to factory as possible.

Thanks in advance!

I did this last Sunday. It didn't require any tools and was just a matter of finding the clips that hold it everything together on the center trim you lift up and away from the gear shifter.

Installation was literally dropping the smoker kit into the opening from the top until everything clicked in to secure it. Then you just need to connect the 2 power plugs. My 2nd plug was taped to the wires and was easily pulled off/away from the wires.

Bumping this thread so I wouldn't make a new one.

For anyone with any electrical know how or maybe they have modified this themselves. I have done the 12V always on mod years ago and now that I installed this kit, only one of the outlets is always hot (the top one with the flip thing). I would much prefer the cigarette lighter outlet to be the one always hot (or both) since I keep my dual usb plug in there for charging. Any easy way to make this work?

Not a huge deal I know but it would be ideal for the way I have things set up.

You can either tap into the current hot lead from the one that is always hot or you can run a separate supply to them both. I ran a totally new wire into the console from my Blue Seas fuse panel.

Since this thread is revived i have a question, has anyone rewired the exposed plug to be a usb plug or two? Then you still have the covered cig lighter if needed right beside it.
