Smoker Kit Mod after discovering my 12 volt problem
Returning with my 2007 4Runner to NC Washington from Chicago I immediately discovered the 12 volt plugs were not working to charge my phone. I stopped at a truck stop and bought a pack of fuses, popped the panel off and check the 15A fuse and the acc fuse but they were ok. So, I just assumed it was a bigger issue to tackle later and charged my phone at hotels and used it sparingly during my drive.
Now that I’m home and reading this forum I have devised a plan for electronics-smoker kit install with the “jump the relay mod” (for constant power)for the 12 volt outlet in the back and the first outlet in the smoker kit (always live) while the second one will remain switched with the ignition and have a dual usb plug with internal accent lights for passager phone use and charging other devices. I like having my phone in a holder on the left side of the steering wheel so I plan on jumping a switched fuse in the panel and add a dual usb in one of the blank switch panels left of the steering wheel. I am going to add a GTA Blue tooth kit to the back of the radio with hands free mic, additional aux wire and 5 volt charging wire. These two extra wires will feed a Sirius Stratus 7 radio device that will be mounted in the space below the heater controls now occupied by the small pop out tray that a lot of people on this forum use for McDonald French Frys. So, major redo plans. And I had the smoker kit purchased but I had to tackle my electrical circuit issues before moving forward.
Tonight I checked the plugs with a meter and discovered I had power in both. I took the usb plug I was using on my trip to another car and found out it was bad. So great news but had to laugh at myself for not doing a better investigation on my trip home. I went ahead and installed the smokers kit-easily snapped in and works great! I am tucking my 4Runner away for 3 months but am eager to tackle the rest of my electronic mods when I return in the Spring. The Smoker Kit was super easy plug and play mod, as everyone has already stated.
