4th Gen Spare Tire Tools - How to put one together

This may be common knowledge to some, but it's been a pain for me to resolve. I've owned my 4Runner for 4 months now and have not been able to find an oem spare tire / jack tool kit. They cost almost $200 from Toyota. I haven't found one at any salvage yards, so I finally put one together and it wasn't that hard. My goal was to have everything stow with the piston jack as a factory bag would.

Lug wrench - 21mm - Local Auto Parts Store - I bought one of the "x" shaped ones with 2 folding arms. It stows nicely next to the factory piston jack. $16

Spare tire Drop down tool - 3/8" square male ratchet head needed - Sears - I bought a 16" 3/8 socket extention and a ratchet. The male end of the extention is a perfect fit. These also stow in with the piston jack. I wrapped them all together in a rag (which will be handy when you need the tools) and used the factory rubberband clip to secure. $28

The ratchet handle doubles as the tool to turn the piston jack screw. I didn't have to replace the jack, as this is one of the only removable parts in my 4Runner that wasn't stripped when I bought it.

So I ended up with a few Craftsman tools and a lug wrench that has 2 times more leverage for 1/3 the cost of oem replacements, and they all stow in the oem area.

Sorry for the most basic of posts, but thought it would help others newbs like me.

Now, how do I put it in drive?

3rd gen?

Does anyone know if the rig described above will work for a 3rd gen 4runner? I just purchased a 2001 sport and it didn't come with any of the gear to change a tire. I'd much rather purchase aftermarket tools instead of getting a set from Toyota..the tools that comes stock usually bends or breaks.

I bought a gorilla lug wrench kit, came with an extenable lug wrench and 2 sockets, also an extension, less than 20 bucks, more leverage than stock, fits nicely next to stock location.

I realized the other day my utility trailer lugs are a different size than the ones on my truck. So....I started searching for one of the 4-way folding wrenches. I was about to pull the trigger on one when I was wandering through the local Lowes and noticed this one:

The same wrench runs $38 from Amazon, Jet, and lots of other places but it's $13 at Lowes. Now I'm ready for about any size lug. One last addition might be a small folding jack stand.

Cut the Spare Cable

So, I just bought a 07 v8. The spare tools are gone and the cable was really loose on the spare. I borrowed the tools from my buddy but the nut that loosens it is stripped to hell. Normally I would drill it out but its so deep down in there, I dont have anything that reaches it. I plan on mounting the tire on the rear gate so I don't care much for the underside stuff. Does anyone have a good idea on how the heck I can get down there and either cut the cable (I cant figure out how to get a wire cutter up there) or, a secondary way to release the tire? The cable is very frayed so I'm concerned its going to break while I'm driving and release the tire. Thanks!!!!
