4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Ark, you are the man!

Quick question, I recently got a 2007 limited which I want to modify for daily driving, comfort and expedition type offroading... no trail use. It will be used 85% on road and 15% off road, therefore I need it to be as civilized as possible. I would love a 1.5 inch lift, but im not really finding a simple plug and play option. What do you think of the OME 884 and 2895E or 884 and toytec with the nitrocharger sports? For my on road use, would I be better off with the very popular Bilstein 5100s and some other coils (FJ or other)?

The car will mainly only be loaded up for trips, load would be roughly 4 or 5 people plus 400 pounds TOPS. But that will only be once or twice a month, so im not sure I want a siff ride 99% of the time just for that.

Thanks for the help!

Would a 3/2 cornfed look good with 265/70/r17 Goodyear Authority A/T?

Looks are very objective, but I think it'd look fine.

I'd go with the 5100's over the OME shocks, the valving seems a little better for on road use. I think the 884's with the Superflex rear coils would be a very nice setup both on and off road.

Would this setup be level? Im doing the math and it looks like it would give me some 2 inches all around leaving me with the stock rake, are the 5100 front shocks adjustable to mitigate for that, or would I need spacers?

Guess who's in sunny CA now?

Yes it's true! Ol' Vic finds himself in Los Angeles, the city of Angels (YEAH, RIGHT!!) for a couple of months, and needs the help of the SoCal crowd badly. Specifically I need the name of a good suspension shop to install a DayStar spacer lift for the front only. I'm tired of being overcharged by the shops in the DC metro area. I'm even prepared to take the truck to a Toyota dealer for the wheel alignment afterward, if necessary.

All recommendations of quality workmanship at reasonable prices will be appreciated. Many thanx in advance.

PS: already have the parts in hand.

FJ add ons

I popped for all four springs and front shocks (Bilstein) from a 2013 FJ a few weeks ago. I put them on yesterday along with the DS 2/3 spacer kit I already had installed. All I can say is why would anybody NOT do this? The ride is vastly improved and it can park in the same garage as my wife's 3rd gen without looking like it just rolled out of a Tijuana chop shop. Fantastic upgrade! If I had known it was this much better I would have done it the day after I bought the vehicle. There are some issues though, I have to address the rear stabilizer bar position and/or links, it's maxed and then some. Rear shock length will need to be 26 inches extended to facilitate all the drop it is now capable of. I currently have Skyjacker Nitros in the rear which feel great now that the Billies are on the front, I will likely get a slightly longer set of those.

I got my OME full suspension lift put on yesterday, and I had the LR UCAs to put on with it. When I went to pick it up, my mechanic (who works at toyota dealership but works for me on the side for cash) said I didnt need new UCAs. I tried searching before I ordered them, and thought I came to the conclusion that it was better to just get em and have em on so I didnt run into problems later...
So, my question to all of you even though I know its been talked about numerous times is....what should I do? Put on the new UCAs or leave the old ones on. He is doing the alignment Monday so we'll see if there are problems there but he insisted on returning them.

UCA's may or may not needed. As you near 3" of lift, it becomes harder to get your alignment back into spec. I'd say have him try the alignment and if everything goes well, you don't "have" to have the UCA's. If he has difficulty getting all numbers within spec, then you'll want to install the UCA's.

Greatly appreciated! Last question, will upgrading from 265/65/17 to 285/70/17s play a part with the UCAs at all? Hes putting those tires on when he does the alignment, so I guess we'll find out. Thanks a lot.

You will need wheel spacers or aftermarket wheels to push the tire out away from the UCA. I doubt the UCAs would provide any benefit here.

I know the info is probably in here somewhere but I thought someone could help me find what I am looking for. I am wanting to put a 1 inch body lift on my t4r. Any advise on what to buy, where to buy it, or anything else I should know? I will most likely be paying a shop to do it because the task seems pretty overwhelming to me.

You going to toss on some bigger tires to go with all that lift? Don't get me wrong, your ride is awesome, but the 265-70-17's are already looking a tad small with all the lift you already have - right? (Just curious).

Yes, 285's will be coming this summer and I would like to do a body lift with them to make sure it fits perfectly.

Toytec or 4crawler. At 1" the steering spacer is optional. I'd suggest getting quotes on install before going to far on it, I got a few quotes locally and they were insanely high.

on the tire/lift fitment guide.. when it states (except bfg at) on stock suspension, does that mean that it does not require some trimming or what.. lil confused..

actually im leaning toward the cooper discover atp 265/70/17.. will this fit stock till i lift.

Okay I will look into the price of doing it. Where can I buy them online though?

Toytec

4crawler

Install write-up

If you'll notice, 4crawler lists the typical 1" kit as options D+RAD. You don't have to have the steering spacer, but also wouldn't hurt to add it either.

You should be fine with 265/70/17 at stock height with those tires. As long as you are running stock wheels and are not running wheel spacers, they shouldn't rub or require trimming. BFG AT's have a very square profile and have more rubbing that most tires in the same size, which is the reason for the note.
