4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Wow, that's good to know. Another suggestion, log on to the Tacoma forums and see if you can find a set from a 05-? Tacoma. The coils are beefier than the FJ's, give about double the lift, but still ride very well. I was running Tacoma shocks/coils on the front of mine for a few weeks until my new parts came in, I was very impressed. Since the Tacoma swap isn't a popular upgrade (yet), maybe you can find a set for cheap/free.

Ill definitely take a look at that. I had never even heard of anyone running taco coils

Me neither. Tacos are much more common than FJ's in my area. If I wasn't done my lift (for now) I would definitely consider them. I like the idea of using less spacer and more coil.

Ark - you've been a great help and I've absorbed tons of knowledge throughout this thread- thank you. With that said, I dont think I've read of anything doing this potential setup.

I own a 2004 4Runner V6 4x4 with 121,000 miles. The shocks are starting to go, so I wanted to get 5100s all the way around paired with 884 and superflex springs. That'll run me $750-$800, on top of new tires. A deal has come to me to buy shocks and springs from an 07 fj with only 1000 miles on them for $100 shipped. Can I just run that entire setup, and put a daystar 2.5/1.5 with it for the clearance? How would the ride be? I wont be doing any serious off roading, its my daily driver with some occasional light trails

I think that's a great setup, very good handling on road and capable off road. You will have limited flex off road, but it will be fine for light stuff (and even moderate but you will start to notice). I'm a huge fan of the FJ setup for mostly on road use, best bang for the buck suspension setup you can get.

I'm not real sure, they may use the same coils. I'll try to look up part numbers and see if I can find anything.

After doing a little more research about the difference, I believe the Super Long Wheelbase coils were made for the Long Bed Tacoma, while the Long wheelbase is made for the regular bed. So with that being said I assume the long wheelbase coils are the way to go.

Please forgive me if this has been answered already- I've been searching and there's a TON of info in this thread. I see that most people running the Toytec Ultimate setup end up with the new UCAs as well. I don't plan on going too nuts with the lift (keeping it close to 2.5" hopefully). Theoretically, from what I understand, if I adjust them for 2.5" of lift, I shouldn't need new UCAs, correct? I know every truck is different. I need new shocks, so the fiancee is ok with the "modest" price increase over regular shocks, but I don't know if I can sway her on a set of UCAs as well haha.

I don't think you would need UCAs from my general knowledge it is mostly for people with larger tires or if you can't align them correctly.

I've been busy lately and haven't had time to look at part numbers, will try to do that some time this weekend.

Agreed, if your under 3" of lift you should have no issues getting an alignment back into spec so UCA's won't be necessary.

Thanks Ark. I only plan on running 265/70/r17, is the lift going to be excessive, or nose high? I was reading in the compiled FJ swap sticky and now I'm hesitant. I know around 3" lift you get into the range of new UCAs and diff drop upgrades, and I'm not interested in doing that right now. Should I use the 1.5 spacer in the back, and use something else in the front? If so, do you have a recommendation with a link to get it?

I'm gonna show my ignorance by asking what's UCA's? :D We have a 3" Ironman lift w/heavy springs and foam filled rear shocks. Our rig handles great on and off road and we haven't had to change anything else out. Thx! :)

Think I figured it out... Upper control arms? We've changed our lower control arms but that was for the fact the OEM ones are prone to bending.

you, upper control arms. Sometimes its hard to get your truck in alignment to spec after a larger lift, I don't want to have to deal with that. I also don't want to look ridiculous with a 265/70 tire lol

Yea, UCA = Upper Control Arm. When you lift 3" or more, it becomes harder to get the caster in spec for your front end alignment. Aftermarket UCA's have a wider range of adjustment and are used to get the alignment back into spec. With 3", some have issues, others don't. I think a lot of it depends on how much effort the shop doing the alignment is willing to put in to get it right.
