4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Oh gotcha. Well the only thing bad I've heard about rc is their shocks suck. You could get a daystar lift for cheaper or go with bilstein 5100 and level it that way for just a little more and have a better ride. That rc kit would be better if it had a rear spacer and front coils.
No I'm talking about just a regular 3 inch with spacers in front and springs and shocks in back. I have a 2wd and I'm really just trying to find some thing for looks that is cheaper.

Yeah Right now i have the daystar and its sagged some so ill probably end up doing it right this time and do the toytec combo with 5100's and toytec coils and springs.

Ya if your springs are sagging in the front the rc kit wouldn't help. This sounds like a much better option.

Just installed an ICON Stage I lift on my 05 Sports Edition 2WD - which just turned 48k on the odometer. The quality of the ICON components is impeccable and the ride quality is close to stock, but a bit 'stiffer' than stock. Steering response feels a bit 'lighter/looser' compared to pre-lift steering feel, primarily at highways speeds, but I anticipate that as the new springs and coil-overs settle and the suspension is re-tuned, the ride and steering feel will only improve. I suspect the difference in steering feel may be associated primarily with the fact that fatigue of the original springs altered the alignment geometry resulting in a 'heavier/tighter' steering feel vs. the ICON setup.

Before the lift installation, the front had sagged sufficiently that the tires were rubbing occasionally under certain combinations of bumps, turns, and suspension travel. Now, with 265/70/R17 Nitto TerraGrappler G2 tires on 17" x 9" AE Alloy 023 Series Wheels (-5mm offset/4.75" backspace) I have detected no rubbing issues of any kind - and that's with mudflaps and fender liners left intact. I'm certain that if larger tires were paired with these wheels, or if these tires were paired with a wheels having a more negative offset, then some rubbing would be more likely up front.

As it stands, the tire/wheel combo extends outward approximately 2" more than the stock wheels and tires and I'm very happy with the look. Further, I don't expect too much drop in MPG having gone up only one tire size in profile from 265/65/17 to 265/70/17. Also don't expect excessive speedometer error with this setup, but I'll report back after I've put some 500 miles or so on it. This could take a few months, however!

In the meanwhile, I'll take some additional pics, post any new observations, and answer any questions you might have about my build project. Thanks to all of you who posted detailed information that helped me make my build decisions!!!

I like that look a lot!

How much lift did you get?
I've got those same exact tires and sizes that I want to put on mine as well. The wheels they're on have some more aggressive offset like yours. I'll have to look what mine are. I put them on wo a lift and they rub quite a bit.

Thanks for the positive feedback holytrails! Spent months trying to figure out what tires and wheels to go with and glad I went the AE Alloys and Nittos - an especially the ICON Stage I. Ride quality keeps getting better by the mile, tires are plenty quiet enough, the stance and track suit my primaliy urban needs, MPG seems about equal to the factory setup, and no rubbing!!!

I took measurements before the lift and having been trying to find the time to record some after lift measurements. I'll post them here as soon as I do. My front end was sagging pretty good (even with only 48,000 miles), so the front seems dramatically higher than before, but is probably only 3" over original as ICON claims. You'd really have to see this thing in person to appreciate how great the lift/tire/wheel combo improved its appearance and how agressive it looks just by going from 265/65 to 265/70 and reducing the wheel offset from +30 mm to -5 mm. Given the chance I wouldn't have done anything differently!

So stupid Black Friday is coming up and I'm considering adding some debt to my credit card like an idiot. Hard to pass up 15-20% off Icon parts though. My question is, go with the monotube rear 2.0, or spend the 200 extra and go for the 2.0 reservoir set? Is there a huge difference off road with the remote reservoir?

2015 4runner trail edition stock susp?

Do you guys know if a 2015 4 runner trail edition stock step up will direct swap into my 2003? I have a 03 V8 limited with 145k, stock looking to improve the handling, I may throw a spacer to level out the front. Can't really do much with a "lift" since I have to drive into the city for work and park in a garage. The stock 03 suspension is shot as you can imagine...

Do V8 front springs give any lift in a V6?
Coworker just got an '06 V6 4x4. He wants to level it. I have my old V8 4x4 fronts in my garage, taking up space. I will gladly help him put them in if it's worth the time.
PS-I know they're not gonna give much, but any more height?

Ever since lift & tires I've been getting flashed at night by oncoming cars. Low beams & fogs on. The stock xreas obviously had a lot of rake and I imagine by leveling the stance, I inadvertently aimed my headlights too high. Honestly I love it because of the improved visibility but I also know it sucks to be blinded by an oncoming car and I don't want to be a d***. I try to let the oncoming car see me change from brights -> low beams so they know. Doesn't always work, and new luxury cars these days have crazy intense high beams. Tough to compete with an on-coming Range Rover blasting brights at you. Unless you have a light bar to fire back at him:)

Has anyone else experienced this after lifting or leveling your 4Runner? Did you do anything about it? Would a cop pull you over for blinding lights, even low-beams? Are you the driver of this Range Rover headlight weapon?

You know I've seen several posts saying exactly what you are saying but I rarely have anyone flash me. Literally maybe a dozen times in 2 years. You can adjust the lights down a little, easy enough to do. Or deal with it. I personally use my ditch lights if they are being a douche, shuts them down instantly. Lol. (yes I know I'm an *******.)

Alright guys, I am looking at getting a lift kit this Christmas and am trying to figure out which route to go. I am looking to spend about $500 (give or take) and would like to make sure I get the best deal for the money. I don't do much offroading yet but I just get my Runner and havent went because it is bone stock.

My 4Runner is a 03 Limited V8 4WD without XREAS.

Needs:
Capable of going off roading
Maintain the stock ride quality (maybe a little stiffer, I feel like my truck bounces a lot)
At least 2.5 inches all around
Would like to avoid spacers if at all possible

I am willing to buy the parts separate instead of buying a complete kit. I do not have any additional weight on the body so that isnt an issue.

Options I am looking into right now:
3" FJ Lift Kit W/Spacers & Rear ToyTec RCC2.0 Coils
Cornfed 3"x2" by Burtman Industries
OME Suspension although those options seem to be out of my price range

Im also trying to figure out some other mods I would like to have done during the Christmas season while I have a little extra cash. So what mods have you done that are a must?

I appreciate any opinions or assistance!!

Bilstein 5100 shocks all 4 corners, rear 2" lift springs. $530-$550. You'll be all set until you can afford to step up.

Thanks for responding so quickly.

So if I got the 4 Bilstein 5100 Shocks and 2" lift springs for the rear, how much lift would that be in total? Would I get the adjustable Bilstein shocks?

I am looking to get it from Toytec's website as they have been extremely helpful! They have a few different options when it comes to rear coils. The two I am looking at are the 'Toytec Superflex Coils' and the other is the 'Old Man Emu 895' or 895E.

Which would you recommend? I have heard nothing but good things about OME so I am leaning towards that direction, plus they are $30 cheaper.

If you get 2" lift springs you will get about that in the rear. I'd go with OME personally since I've seen many complain about the superflex.
With the front you can adjust up to 2.5" of lift. Personally I'd find some front FJ coils and put them in as they help with the ride quality. You can order new ones from rockauto for $50 too. Stock front springs will definitely work too so don't be scared of them. I still have the stock coils in the front of mine.

Could I put a top plate spacer on the front as well as the Shocks?

Yes, I put a spacer on and set my Bilsteins at 0" lift a couple weeks ago. Gave me a smoother ride. You can adjust the Bilsteins to get the lift you want. Just remember, if you go above 3" you'll need uca's and a dif drop to compensate.

That sounds like something which might work for me as well. We're looking for about a 2" lift. I found setting Bilstein at max 2.5 was too firm for us. Knocked it down to 1.75, and it helped, but open to different options as we want a real smooth onroad ride.

When you set your Bilsteins to 0" lift, what did you use for lift in the front?
thanks.

I have a 1.5" spacer, which equals 3" of lift. Rides smoother than when I had the shocks set at 2.5.
