4th gen. Tire pressure sensor

So I got a new 2004 4runner since my 03 was totaled in the Hurricane (charley). And the new 4runner has these new tire pressure sensors. I want to add the sensors to the new rims and tires.

The problem that i'm running into, from what i understand, is that the valve stem is connected to a sensor inside of the rims. No I've heard 3 different stories.

1) the valve stems and sensors will not fit the new 20"

2) If I put on the new rims without the sensors my tire pressure light will never come off my dash.

3)or, from a toyota tech, that the sensors in the new rims will throw off the speed sensors and the tire pressure sensor and my truck will be all out of wack.


Can any here help me clarify which is true if any before I replace these rims on Wednesday.

I know many of you have limiteds and have had these sensors for a while. Alos many of you have changed your rims or lifted your truck, what did you experience?

Here is the new runner. It will look much better. Simply because they are 10" wide rims. With the offset, the tires stick out about 1.5". They look really beefy.

I can't verify it from personal experience, but from some threads on YotaTech, it seems to be that the sensors are built into the valve stems. If you have the tire pressure monitoring system, you should have silver stems that are mounted to the wheel using nuts. Another individual on that forum said he was able to remove the valve sensors and mount them on a set of aftermarket wheels with no problem. He did recommend that you have a wheel tech who knows about the sensors do the swap because it is very easy to damage them if the tech doesn't know how to deal with them. I don't see what the tire pressure sensors would have to do with the speed sensor system. I think the tech who told you that was 'confused'.
 
I think you may also be able to purchase the tire pressure monitoring stems if you have problems getting them off the originals - the owners manual talks about registering extra sets of tires with the tire pressure monitoring system if you for instance use different rims for winters. My guess is also that you will have a different pressure in the 20"s compared to the 17"s and you may need either different stems to account for that or some programming of the monitoring system to tell it the new correct pressures.

I would be interested to hear more on this since I plan to get a set of 16" steel rims for winter and dont want to be switching these stems between the two sets when I switch tires.
 
This were I was a bit confused as well. About 2 weeks ago, I got new rims for my truck. I thought I was going to have the tire pressure light on, however I don't. I kept my old rims and wheels, so I am pretty sure the shop did not swap the stems out. Since I did not tell them about it. So either they swaped it for me or there is something wrong with my truck. I just have not had time to test it out yet.

Maybe, because you removed all the wheels, and sensors, the system doesn't trigger the alarm?
 
Light on

I went today to change my rims. They tried to swap the stems, but the did not seal properly on the new rim and it kept leaking. So we didn't use them at all.
Now the light is on and is satying on solid, not blinknig.

But it might just be that the spare still has one.

The stem has a metal washer on the outside and rubber on the inside, so it still leaks air out.

The spare does have one on - there is a thread somewhere about a mod to add a hose to allow you to top it up with air without taking it out from under the truck and it mentions people getting a warning when the spare lost pressure. If you get the dealer to remove the stem on the spare my guess based on this thread is that you should be ok.
 
Yeah take it to the dealer and ask them if they can remove it from the spare or disable the system. I just put new wheels on my Runner earlier tonight and the stems went on without a hitch, no lights or anything.

Just to clarify, you took the original stems w/sensors from your OEM wheels and installed them on your new rims and you get no lights?
 
That is very promising news. Did you do it yourself? How did you secure the device from the inside of the rim?
 
I took it to Discount Tire and had them do it. I bought new wheels and wanted to keep my tires, and I can't mount tires as I don't have the machine. I have a balancing machine, but that won't help me when it comes to taking off and putting on a tire...

I've always gone to this discount tire and they do good work, I asked about the sensor before starting because I was also worried about it and they said it shouldn't be a problem. I guess some wheels work better than others with the sensor, I got lucky and it worked great. Hopefully yours will too!
 
I found the tire presure sensor fuse relay. Its under the glove box. There is a plastic cover there with only one screw. I unplugged it but it does not make the light come off. Wonder what it really does?
 
I even disconnected the actual control box located beneath the glove box and the lights still stayed on.
 
my tire story

I bought a new toyota 4 runner, the car came with (long story but they were free) 20" DOA Toetag wheels:

about 2 weeks after i got it tire warning came on
brought it in, (sunroof TSB also done) they ordered parts (sensors) all four were bad.... month later i bring it in (yesterday) at 7AM and they wait all damn day then say "we need it until tomorrow so we can take it to a tire shop because your 20" wheels are too big." So i sit at home today and wait. This is the last time I go to this Dealer. Last time I had a grease spot on my seat when i got it back from them. I wanted to post pics but my car is in the tire shop!
