4th gen. Tire pressure sensor

I know this is rehashing and old subject, But i just wanted to let you guys know that i got my sensors on to my new rims. I' ve had them on there for a few weeks now and have waited to see if there were any leaks, but there are none. I found a set of valve stems from toyote that came with larger rubber washers. Actually they are really nice chrome valve stems.

The part number for the new stems is 00016-34103, it's like $14 for all four. I took the rubber washers from this stem and used to replace the tiny rubber washer origianally on the Tire sensor. Then I tightened them on with the original washer and bolt cap on to my 20" nad they work perfectly.

I think this is something that some of you can use for those of you looking to change you rims and keep the tire pressure monitoring system.

Looks like the 20" wheels need a different v/stem.

Just to clarify. Did they remove the old stems from the sensors and attach them to the new stems?
 
Here is my theory why your light is on while others have swapped the rims with no light. (From what I have read about the Tire Pressure Warning System on the 4R)

The sensors only send a signal if the the pressure has dropped, otherwise they stay silent to save battery power.

If you remove your stock wheels and tires and put on new rims and tires, there will be no warning as the devices are not there to warn and the whole time they were within wireless reach of the the ECU there was never any signal sent because the pressure is fine in the original tire and rim combo.

If you remove the original tires and rims and take the sensors out and try them in the other rims they will have sent the signal that the tire is flat and you will get the light.

What I don't know is the proceedure to reset the TPW so that the light goes out.

In the future I would make sure if you are taking the original tires and rims off for good I would make sure they stay inflated while within range of the 4R.

Tire Pressure Light On

So, i got my new 20's about 2 weeks ago. I did not move the tire pressure sensor to the new rims so i assumed i would have no problems.

Question 1:
For the first 3 weeks, everything was fine, but this morning my sensor light is on solid, not blinking. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Another question:
I checked my pressure today in my new tires after the light came on and they are all the same pressure, but at 50psi. This seems a little high. Does anyone know what the pressure should be for 275/45/20's??

Where are your old rims (with sensors) stored? Is the original spare still on? I ask because I have winters on at the moment with no sensors in them - I had one situation where the lamp started to blink (still dont know why) when I parked at work it came on when I set off for home still but once the truck had been parked at home overnight the light went off. My theory is that the original tires were close enough to where I park for the system to think they were on the truck and reset itself.

In your case, if you are parking next to the old rims at home and they have deflated slightly the system may be thinking they are still on the truck and giving you a false reading.
 
All five (5) sensors are registered to your vehicle. Unless something has chaged int he production of these sensors, the all report back to the ECM. If they are missing, the ligt turns on. It appears that some of your computer are taking longer to report than others, but none the less, the tire pressure light will eventually turn on.

Go to toyota and have some one plug the hand held comp into your ECM and verify this.
 
So the light is still on, I put my old rims/tires next to the truck for a while to see if it would "recalibrate" but no dice.

I also called my dealership's service dept. The guy i spoke to said "He had no idea how the system works" so he can't help me, but if i buy all new sensors from them and pay to get them installed it should fix the problem. ($160 each sensor plus labor)

Anyone out there with aftermarket rims have a good solution to the problem that doesnt involve paying the stealership lots of money?

You already have the sensores. Why do you have to buy new ones. Just take your old sensors, that are already calibrated, off the old rims, and place them on the new rims.

I had the OEM Limited 17", took the sensors off, placed on my Deep 6 20"s, and the light turned off.

There have been multiple threads on this and the few others also moved thier sensors over.

My dealership has one guy that only deals with the rims, wheels, balancing, sensors.

He knew exactly how to remove them (the unscrew from the rim), place them on the new rims, and reprogram the ECM for the new rims.

What rims do you have again, the 20"s?
 
If your dealership has no idea how the system works there is a TSB issued by Toyota that explains it fully to them - I assume they have at least one technician who can read...
 
Quick question. I've got the 17" Sequoia/Tundra wheels that I am going to have powder coated. Has anyone successfully transferred the sensors over to these wheels? I asked about it at the dealership when I was having some service done and they gave me some clueless-sounding answer about how they weren't sure if the Sequoia/Tundra wheels were compatible with the sensors - obviously that's crapola, but I was just wondering if anyone was aboe to do it - thanks!
 
That's not entire BS from the dealership. Some wheels don't have the space near the valve stem to accomodate the sensor. Not sure about the fitment on those type of wheels, sorry. Only one way to find out though ;):

In the winter, I run steel rims with no sensors, and the light remains off until I do a highway trip of more than about 50 miles, then the light flashes. Once I get home from the highway trip and resume normal daily driving, the light quits flashing and remains off. I am on my second winter and this has been borne out on my occasions.

The spare is the original with the sensor.

Have no explanation of this occurence

I also use steel wheels without sensors in the winter. It takes about 2+ hours and 130+ miles of driving before the dash light starts flashing. Once I get back home and the 4Runner is close enough to where I have stored the alloy wheels & tires with the sensors, the system turns off the flashing dash light.
 
It's hard to believe that tire pressure monitoring is built into the wheel itself through the valve stem and would have to be transferred everytime you switch out tires or rims. I understand its a different manufacturer but in my BMW the tire pressure sensors is in tune with the on board computer. The computer senses when one or more wheels rotates faster or slower and alerts the driver of possible low tire pressure. This system/theory works just in the traction control system. If a tire is low on pressure it will naturally rotate slower than the others that are filled to proper inflation. Whenever you change the tire pressure to accomodate certain driving conditions like I do when I track my car, you have to reset the system so it can be on the same page as your tires. It has nothing to do with a valve stem sensor.
 
That article really summed it up. Thanks for the insight. It is no shock that BMW will incorporate such a loose cannon approach to this but as I thought more about it, they were one of the first companies to come out with such technology well before this new legislative statute was in effect. I'm sure they've switched to the direct method approach.

Interesting theory. I drove 100 km (62 miles) today and the light started to flash. The vehicle is now in my garage and the alloy wheels with TPM sensors are in the basement. I wonder if 15 feet of space and a concrete slab will transmit the signal?
