4th Gen to 5th Gen...talk to me.

When I had my V8 4th gen my wife would always complain when I floored it a from a stop light. She would always say is this necessary as it pinned her back in the seat. On my 5th gen I can floor it from a stop every time and she does not notice (nor does the 5th gen 4runner accelerate very fast from a stop). Once the 5th gen get up to around 3k rpm or so the acceleration is similar between the 2.

While the low end torque feels faster when accelerating (and that's what got your wife complaining) the 5th Gen V6 accelerates way faster than a 4th Gen V8 - it's not even close (did multiple runs out of curiosity with a friend who owns a 2008 4th Gen V8).
Of course the V6 needs to be in higher revs - can't drive it like the V8 engine.

Not buying this at all. And besides who wants to drive around at 4k all the time. Much better to have the power where you drive 80% of the time.

Just checked the listings for R’s of similar years and mileages to double check my math. If I owe $19k on the loan and they’re listing for over $30, that’s good, right?! This is starting to make more sense, just need to make sure I’m not being too impulsive.

Why do you drive like this?

Are you talking about selling to a buyer or dealer?

Take the cash and the insurance savings for a month or two and see if that tempts you to keep your old rig.

Sounds like you get where I'm coming from! Does it do just fine going up I70 and what not now that you have the 33's on it? I just might take you up on your offer to check it out too since I've only been in a rental 5th gen before and have little in the way of a frame of reference.

Only had the 33's a little over a month, but no real struggles heading up I70 on a couple of trips so far.

You should buy it, because it's true. I bet the FJ was the older model with the 236hp instead of 270+.

The 5th gen engine does 285hp/289tq on 91 octane as well, so imagine a lot of folks are running that in this thread.

The 5th gen is neutered on throttle response down low for CAFE mpg averages across the fleet. A tune or Pedal Commander really brighten things up a lot. So between the 91 octane, area under the curve improvements of the 1GR-FEv2 in the 5th gen vs the v1 in the Tacos and most years of the FJ, and the slightly superior 5th gen aerodynamics compared to the 4th gen, it's really not that much of a big deal.

That said, the V8 sends good vibrations (literally) through the cabin, and I do wish the V6 could do that. V8s just sound awesome. The V6 sounds better than a high strung I4... but still.

At the end of the day tho, engine vibrations and sounds are going bye-bye as electrics phase in, so in this day and age, to get that V8 rumble in a new car, you have to either commit to a gigantic-assed overbuilt behemoth of an old-school truck that gets 12mpg or worse, or fake engine noise through your stereo lol. Cuz you won't get it in a Raptor.

So this brings up an interesting point about MPGs...I get about 16mpg with the 33's in this V8 keeping in mind I'm at elevation and go up and down big mountain passes quite a bit. I was thinking if I get the 5th Gen, then I'd start with higher avg MPGs and then they'd go down a bit when I get 33's. However, if I get a pedal box (as we call them in the tuned car world) that would tank my MPGs more then since it's overriding things that are programmed in to increase MPGs, no?

I know we don't drive these trucks with 33's to get good MPGs, it was just one plus item for the 5th gen.

Living in CO, I wouldn't touch a 5th Gen if you drive up I70. Stick with the V8 and keep the R. 5th gens are sooooo cookie cutter in this state.

Damn you! I know...there are A LOT of 5th gens here for sure. The R is unique (getting less so by the day) and that is a nice feeling. There are a lot of 4Runners here period though, but yeah, nice modded 4th gens are rarer than modded 5th gens for sure.

I was in CO this summer and thought the same thing! Way more 5th gen 4Runners on the roads than any other model, it was crazy! This was before we had really started looking for new trucks, and part of what made the 5th gens catch my eye.

Huh. Sooo I had a chance to drive a lifted one on 33's at a dealership in Denver. It's interesting because they basically install the TRD Pro suspension on a TRD ORP, which gives it a 3" lift (instead of 2.5 on a Pro?) and they throw on 285/70 KO2s. It drives really well at city speeds, and yeah is a little sluggish off the line, but it's not terrible really. I would be really curious about highway speeds and going up mountain passes, but I think it would just be a matter of shifting to sport mode and going into 4th gear (like you should anyway). Sure, it's not the V8, but it's not the 3rd Gen V6 either and I can tell a simple pedal box would help.

Interesting note, their lift install is really clean and the CV angle barely looks altered! Wonder if there's a diff drop, or if since the 5th gens come with 32's, a 33" tire and a 3" lift isn't a huge difference?

Of course they're throwing numbers at me to get me into the thing today. Sticker their mod'd TRD ORPs is $48k, but they knocked off $6k without me even asking when I just asked for numbers. Tempting, but I know they'll hose me on my trade-ins since private party is always better.

Dealership got me close to pulling the trigger but really low balled the trade-ins (as usual). They offered me $4k for my 4th gen that I literally just paid $8 for back in February, and even that was a steal since most were going for $10. They wouldn't go higher than $26 for my R...which is about $3 lower than my minimum I'd let it go for. They did drop the price to about $42, which wasn't bad, but just a bit high for my taste.

Ah well, I think I'll keep an eye out for a choice used one, or if I'm really going to do it, sell my R privately and either use the leftover cash to make my 4th gen how I want it, or as a down payment on a 5th gen.

I have both now and they are very different but also very similar. The 5th gen has a better sitting position and visibility. There is more space in the interior. The stock premium JBL 5th gen stereo isn’t the best. The premium 10 speaker JBL in the 4th gen sounds amazing. The 5th has more standard safety features. I don’t feel the 5th gen is slow at all. When compared to my V8 4th gen, the 5th gen seems a little slower off the line, but at speed I have no problems cutting through traffic. Fuel mileage on the meter is showing about the same, high 17’s. My 5th gen is completely stock at this point. My 4th gen has BFG KO2 265/70/17 C loads, K&N cold air and custom TRD catback exhaust. They both have full time 4WD and pretty much the same features.

They both feel very solid on the road.
I love driving both these 4Runners. I’m very happy with how the 5th gen feels and performs. It’s not broken in yet, so I’m hoping it’ll only get better.

I had a Golf R. Try selling it on VWVortex.

Lol dealership left me a message yesterday hoping to get my business. I’ll might go for it if they give me $29 for the golf and $42 out the door for the modded TRD ORP. Doubtful they’ll mark it down so far from $48 but they have three of these things and they’re 2018s.

What do you all think?
