4th gen Transfer Actuator Assembly

Does anyone know how to put it back to together?

I took it apart to get the mud out of it after it stopped working. I know how to put it back together as far as gears but I'm having trouble getting the timeing right.

It thinks its in 4wd when it in 2wd. I think it has something to do with this blue gear. Any help would be appreciated..... Thanks

I'm no expert, but I think you'll need to pull it.

There are lots of threads talking about trying to fix the actuator without pulling the transfer case, but I have never found anyone who stated they could get the timing back to normal without taking it apart (or doing a replacement).

I didn't take the actuator off just opened it from the bottom. I think i just have to find the right spot for this blue gear. When i tried it a few times i was getting the 4wd light but it was in 2wd with the front hubs locked.

This is the gear i'm talking about but its a fuzzy pic so cant tell where the line is to time it

if not mistaken, this blue gear can be seen through an inspection window on the black plastic cover from the outside. Perhaps one of the members can snap a picture of it to show the position of the gear when in 2WD mode.

Eh, good luck with that; honestly I mean it. Because so far I haven't seen anyone successfully re-time one of those actuators reliably (I even tried as a last ditch effort for a customer with a stuck actuator issue.)

How did you get mud inside the unit? I've been pretty aggressive with my 4Runner in the mud and water before and never had it fill with stuff.

It worked for a while after that but stopped and opened her up to find mud and maybe a half cup of water.

Well my search begins for a used transfer.

What years are interchangeable for a 06 v6?

Buy a new actuator from Toyota $800 and open up the case and change it yourself.

There is a little DIY on here with pics of someone replacing it properly themself.

I just opened up the actuator motor housing and looked in to see how bad my motors were frozen (rusted) I knew better than to take any of the gearing apart lol.

also its an oring sealed housing so I can only imagine salty moisture breaking it down and or heating/cooling expanding/contracting would allow water in. Hell the bolts could even need re-torquing for all I know there's not a great deal of info for these things out there.. just a whole lot of frozen stuck rusted actuators..

whoever said they can get the actuator assembly for 800 could you pm me a dealership to hit up for that price I need one and the cheapest I've found has been 856.38 with some shipping costs.

I'm considering purchasing an entire transfer case, I've found a new one for 2358.85, all the local dealerships have quoted me minimum 800 bucks to install the actuator and that doesn't replace any seals (which mine could use) plus it would give me spare parts if I were to tear something up offroad. I've been tossing both that and the DIY option around.. my time is money to though so getting through the learning curve, plus the risk of messing something up inside the t-case sound equally expensive as paying someone to do it.

I figured out why I couldn't get this thing timed no matter what I did.

The blue gear is what tells the truck where it's at in the cycle.

It does that by pushing down on the prongs that connect to each other. Simple enough well mine had dirt in it and i couldn't get continuity when bench testing it.

After I cleaned it still nothing so now going to try to find a donor or just might have to shell out the cash and split the case. Looks like some of the silver rubbed off where the dirt was.
