4th gen vs. GX vs. Sequoia

I like the GX470, especially those with KDSS. But I also like Trail. Those who know me knows that I love the Rubicon. However, I also have a family. So, for my needs, the Rubicon would not be a good vehicle. But my offroading needs are a bit more than what a stock GX can offer. So, a Trail is the perfect compromise.

There you go!
:bluejump:

The Rubi does not tow enough for my needs. Love the new unlimited but it's ungodly without a lift. The TE is a great compromise (is it really a "compromise" or the perfect fit?) for wheeling families for sure. I've got a 69 CJ5 for wheeling trips. I flat tow it to the trail and go from there. This GX for me is a DD that fits the bill AND can get me to the snow and back.

Oh man I'm telling you! I can tell I'm getting older because the ride, the leather, the woodgrain, the SOUND SYSTEM, the color....the car was made for me!

I know it's two different directions but being that this was more than I originally set out to spend, I went and test drove the 4R TE just to be sure I was moving in the right direction. The 05 GX felt light years more refined, more, well, just more. The new TE felt like a strippo model vehicle. I know, two target markets, but familiar price point.

For those that have driven the 10 or 11 4R TE, did it sound to you like the engine was winding up, loud, rough? Didn't the feel of the car seem, cheap?

Even compared to my 06SE it seemed like all the materials were cheapened?

Anyway, I did like the TE, but I found, it's not for me and my 99% on road butt.
I am in the same situation. The Trail and all 5th gens are to rough sounding. I get back in my 03 V8 and like it much better. I may get a new GX 460 but the nearest dealer is 3 hours away and I have a hard time spending that much on a vehicle. I would be happy with a 5th gen with the 4.6 V8. The sad part is Toyota has the 4.6 and 6 speed auto readily available but will not use it. I do not want to hear about gas mileage etc. Ford puts 412 hp V8s in stock Mustand GTs. I need to buy something soon and really want a 4runner but if things do not change on the 2012s I am looking elsewhere. 2012 will probably be to late though because I will probably be buying this spring.

Congrats on your new ride! I like those vehicles, except for one thing. Personally, the barn door system on the GX470 is a deal breaker for me, so I'll never buy one.

Re the Sequoia, 2008 and newer was the re-design. Those are based on the Tundra truck and when equipped with the 5.7L V8, have a 10,000# towing capacity! Yitbos! The pre-2008 Sequoia has I believe a 6500# towing capacity (same as the Land Cruiser). So if you are going to do some serious towing, the newer Sequoia is the one to get. Plus, it has a longer wheelbase, so can handle a longer trailer more safely than the older Sequoia. Personally, I think the styling of the new Sequoia knocks it out of the park compared to the old design, which to me looks very dated.

I haven't driven the newer Sequoia yet, but we were checking it out at the Auto Show on Thanksgiving. The seats were extremely comfortable -- no comparison to the 4Runner or even the the Land Cruiser seats. We might be looking for one of those used in a couple of years.

I have to say, inside the new Sequoia makes me...horny. HA HA HA. It is so darn nice, modern, and HUGE! I think the back seats have more leg room than I have cargo space! I came to the realization that I didn't need something that big, so I jumped on the GX. I agree, the barn door is in a word, weird. Time will tell if I hate it or not. I figure there is one thing it does serve a purpose for, blocking light winds coming from the passenger side. :jump: I don't see me ever "loving" the barn door, but I don't think I'll hate it. I will miss the rear window rolling down. Still I look like this... as I'm supposed to finally pick up the GX today. (prep and detail) It's Lexus...they are anal. The pics I posted the truck was not detailed. Hmmm....

Good gosh.

Are you trying to compare the ride between Lexus SUV vs. an off road T4R? GX is probably at least 1.25 price of a T4R.

I think both the new and old GX had a recall due to rollover issues with the greater height of the vehicle.

You obviously cannot give an educated or objective opinion on these two vehicles when you imply the T4R is better off road, when you probably have never ever driven a GX. Then to imply the GX has a rollover issue is totally ridiculous. The FACT is the premium GX is actually shorter than the TE T4R (the base GX is the same height as the T4R). If you don't know what you are talking about, do yourself a favor and don't let everyone know it.

Um, can't find a recall because of a rollover issue anywhere. And, as for price, I wasn't looking new. So, I got a MUCH better deal on the GX. $30K with 19K miles. The "demo" TE was $38,900 for what I felt was far less of a vehicle. Again, off roading is 1% of my driving AND I have a 69 CJ5 for THAT type of wheeling.

I've got limited slip front and rear, no power steering, four wheel drum brakes, a windshield that folds down, a gas tank under my seat, and Buick V6. It does all the hard wheeling I need. She's taken me over the Rubicon and Sierra Trek many times. Not gonna take a TE there, not gonna take the GX there. So for me, made sense to compare them for my needs.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about.

The GX is taller than the T4R, and when it came out in 2010, there was a report by Consumer Reports of the potential for rollover. Then, Lexus actually HALTED the sale of this vehicle so that they could fix the stability control problem.

DC_Dude just because you cant afford nicer cars doesnt mean you need to hate on people that can.

PS do you live in DC - that would explain a lot based on the persuasion of people that live there.

Sorry, you're beyond ridiculous.

Just because your arguments and other's arguments get shot down, don't hate the messenger. Hate the facts.

And since you live in Jersey....yeah...totally understand based on the persuasion of people who live there.

And BTW, your math doesn't add up just like your math didn't add up with the "extra 1 mpg that you get from filling up with midgrade."

And, we're talking about a used $30K GX, not a new one. Everyone who bought a new T4R either SE or Limited paid more than $30K.

Just to clear something up; you're comparing a 2010/11 GX with an 05 GX. The 2010 was recalled because of how it reacted during avoidance maneuvers, not because it was was susceptible to rolling over.

See here ----> Lexus Vehicles : Customer FAQs for 2010 Lexus GX 460 Recall / Toyota

Also here ----> Consumer Reports Cars Blog: Recall: Lexus to update 2010 GX 460 stability control software

It's only fair to note that Lexus has since resolved the issue with VSC, and that they acted quickly to resolve the issue.

The GX is a my favorite SUV - it's got all the capability of the runner, and the luxury of a Lexus. I prefer the performance of the X5 over the GX, but the cost of ownership is silly. I actually had the guys where I get my wifes 3 series serviced tell me to not open the panoramic sunroof because they break so frequently. I love bimmers, but I'm done fixing them.

Enjoy your GX and throw some pics up when you get the chance.

I bought a 2005 GX470 not a GX460. And yup it only has 19K miles. Personally, I think I scored. :jump:

Of course, craptastic iPhone pics!! Tomorrow 10am I get my Lexus introduction class...ha ha ha. I have to say, the girl that helped me was WELL versed on the Toyota Prado and GX470, from knowing breakover angles, clearance, hp... it was a little hot really! She showed me info on both using enthusiast sites I've never heard of!

The old GX470 never got any recall nor TSB for any rollover issue that i know of. Do you have any data to support your claim that the "old" GX had a recall about this?

The important issue is that the "old" GX got a much-needed rear clunk issue fixed via TSB, while the 4th gen 4runners never got one!

And btw, the "old" GX is equally capable off-road as any 4runner (except 2009 4runner Trail Ed). In fact, one can argue that the old GX470 is better simply because it had the KDSS option, while the 4runner did not (XREAS is not the same off-road).

Make sure that the previous owner did the rear clunk TSB!

I plan on doing just that today. I wont miss that in the 4Runner even though I had it at bay. When I first got the rig, I thought I got rear ended. Enough to get out and look. Boy did I look the fool...

Its funny how some people get it and others dont. I had it for the first 5k of ownership - not once did I feel it the last 55k.

Just to clarify the FACTS;

The 2010 TE T4R is 74.2" tall (same as the base GX) and the 2010 Premium GX is 73.8" tall (which is exactly what I posted). Yes, the SR5/LE is shorter.

There was NEVER a rollover issue with ANY GX. The issue that CR felt was a problem was the VSC was kicking in late, which Lexus simply recalibrated to engage sooner.

Trust me when I say, no one loved the 4th gen T4R more then me and I can now say the GX is even better in every way except the price (even more so compared to the 5th gen).

Listen to this man - trust me.

Koz - do you plan on installing that extended Amsoil system in your GX?

The off-reoading in the new GX may not be as good...compared to the off-road oriented 4runner editions.

No, the 4.6 has a 8qt. sump and uses 0w-20 which makes it good for a 1 year OCI. The 4.6 uses the cartridge type oil filter that can be changed with out removing any skid plate like the 4.7. Also the new 0w-20 Toyota synthetic is proving to be excellent oil (which is specially formulated just for Toyota) and it is very reasonably priced. I have two years to keep an eye on the performance of OEM oil. I will be getting UOAa to help me decide what to do when I have to start paying for the oil.
