4WD (H4) on V6 destroys transmission?

And on a straight flat surface is best

This is NOT necessary. With 1999 Limited 4runner (thx Ron for correcting me) and up (including 4th gen), you can run 4-HI (center diff UNLOCK) all day long without a lick of damage.

Right - what I do it at the beginning of each month, put it in 4WD and drive my normal errands and stuff until I've gotten at least 10 miles on it. Makes it easy to remember.

Appropriate use of 4hi and 4 lo with and without locking the diff

OK....I know that you guys are much smarter than me from what I see. As some of you men (and ladies) know I just got my 07 SE 6 (six)....I have read this post and think I understand,,,,HOWEVER, in the interest of clarity can someone just LIST when and where to use these? please?

thanks

4 lo
with
without

4 hi

etc.....for simple minded people who are awestruck by this vehicle that format would help me....thanks....AK Man

One thing that is so cool is that you can do that in 4lo. I had to drive around on my lawn pulling tree's and brush out and it was nice to have the ability to use 4lo without having to have it locked in which I would have chewed up my lawn . I can drive , turn ect... just like normal.

OK, I'll try.
For 4th Gens:

4 lo
with: The toughest of slow speed, off-road conditions where you want/need the highest traction abilities.
without: Contrasted with the above by somewhat easier terrain and/or you want turning ability without scrubbing the tires.

4 hi
with: Higher speed off-road or slippery conditions. Only in severe, short-term cases would you use this on road.
without: Normal road conditions where you desire 4WD drive (all wheel drive) for whatever reason.

Well said guys.

The 4R has a great 4wd system. It gives you some good options , now if they only had a switch to turn off the VSC it would be perfect. I love the Atrac and don't mind that always being enabled , but it would also be a plus to select it or not in either axle. 1 on/off button for front and one on/off for back.

That would make this system have a lot of options .

Better yet on/off lockers for front and rear , but the Atrac will have to do.

I thought you could only lock the diff in 4Lo, didn't think it was possible in 4Hi with a 4th gen

Yup...you can lock center diff either in 4-Hi or 4-Lo.

I would stay away from locker in the front diff. Locker + stock IFS = possible Kaboom.

Thanks for that and I think I get it....

4lo with....stuck or near stuck in any sort of stuff used to move over barriers that are very tough max speed not over 12 mph (guess)

4 low without about the same but not as tough.....serious slush ice where you are going over the mountains on pavement no more than 15 mph?

4 hi with...serious slush

4 hi without....slippery conditions where you may hit ice at any time......

how does that fit within your definitions?

Thanks again.

Trying to stay brief per your request. Sounds like you're clear on 4hi. As far as normal roads go, you can almost forget about low range. You always have the option of downshifting in hi, even all the way to 1st, to control speed. One thing: DAC - Downhill Assist Control - ony works in low.

P.S. You should start a thread. See who can come up with the simplest, clearest list for you.

can 4h run at any speed?

OK I've read through this thread. I have an 06 V6 SR5. What is not clear to me is can you run in H4 w/o differential lock at any speed all day long OR do you have to keep the speed under 62?
Thanks guys!

You can run it full time in 4HI at whatever speed you want.

today I took my new SE 4WD into the mountains for some trials with the 4WD on the 6 cylinder....when I put the car in 4 lo there was a constant beep. is this normal?

IIRC, the beep says it didn't go into 4LO. Check the owner's manual to be sure.

Teck is right. Ever since 1999, 4wd 4runners V6 can run in 4-HI (center diff UNLOCK) all day long on any surface.

Since 2003, the center diff on the V6 4wd model is same as V8 4wd...Torsen center diff. Thus, you can run in 4-HI (center diff UNLOCK) all day long on any surface.

As for 62 mph, you can switch from 2-HI to 4-Hi up to this speed. You can switch from 4-HI to 2-HI at ANY speed.

And these are DEFINITIVE facts.:)

Ah yes, but why the heck would you want to be in 4WD above 62 mph? I cant think of a case...

This actually happened to me the other day while attempting to impress someone by going up a 70 degree hill or so. I switched it into 4Lo and it beeped like hell. I just said that it was warning me that the gears are low and went up the hill (knowing that I was in 4High). Don't know what to say... I switched it into park and neutral to no avail. I'll have to play with it.

Now you're throwing logic and reason into the discussion ..... :D

I can't think of a practical reason to run 62 mph in 4WD, but technically, you can do it.
