4WD Indicator Light Dead

I keep doing forum searches on this, but I am having the reverse problem of what I seem to find. My 4WD engages no problem (both HI & LO); however, my light on my dash does not turn on (the green one). It does not even turn on when I start the car (I thought all dash lights were supposed to? I am not sure).

Anybody know where to start with this? Is this a bulb issue? Thanks!

I too, have the same problem. Recently purchased '98. Not entirely sure but I believe it's not a bulb. I've only had the truck for a few weeks. Had the dash out on the one nice day we've had and was swapping bulbs. Didn't seem to fix the issue. I'll also note I was swapping in LED's and a few pops deep. Them LED's are a little finicky and I was in a hurry. I'm gonna be tearing back into it this weekend so I'll let ya know what I figure out. Something tells me on mine it's not a bulb issue. I made a post about it some time back. I'll definitely let ya know what I do or do not figure out.

My 4wd indicator light has never worked (since I acquired her anyways) and now in the past couple months my "Cruise" light has burnt out as well.

Anyone pull the instrument panel out to replace these bulbs? I'm guessing it is quite the PITA, but I don't have any research to back that up.

I've pulled the cluster out of my 2001 and it wasn't difficult. Just unscrew the column panel, then remove the ignition ring insert, then unscrew the two screws above the cluster in the panel and then the two screws at the bottom of the panel that you gained access by removing the column panels and then if I remember there are a few screws on the cluster itself. Unplug the cluster and take it inside to work on it. Assemble in reverse order.

If it is not the bulb, suspect the actuator switch on the front differential. This is what reports back to the dash that the ADD has engaged.

It is easily accessible at the rear of the front diff without removing the skids. Look for the two wire harness. While the switch should require a 27mm metric socket for removal, a shallow 1-1/16" socket worked just fine for me. You will lose a few drops of gear lube when you remove the old one, so be ready for that.

I replaced mine with a Dorman p/n 600-554.

BTW - that light does not illuminate with key on>engine off if the transmission is in 2wd.

Many drivers don't like the green color of the interior lights, that can be fixed. The lights behind the dash, center console, key ring, map lights, and dome lights can all be changed

Let there be light. Thanks so much for the advice and PN, Riceye. Worked like a champ. Though, I think I found that I have a rear main seal leak, at least my 4WD light works now -
