4wd troubleshooting

Cwarrenm See the hose to the right of the one you have circled on the upper intake manifold? Switch those 2 hoses. Your VSV vacuum line should connect to the upper intake manifold. and the fuel pressure regulator should connect to the intake silencer resonator (the boxy section of your intake tube between the throttle body and your engine air filter box.)

Hey Bad Luck, thanks! That was exactly what I needed to know. I'm not sure how or when those lines got switched around but I'm glad it was a simple fix

You're welcome bud. I'm glad it worked out for you. Mine got accidentally switched when I did my valve cover gaskets. Oops!

Unfortunately, I can't be sure which hole is correct for which switch from the manuals I have for '98. I just have the EWD.

Hi, sorry to bring up this old post. I am new member and have some issues with 4WD and troubleshooting it too. May I pm you with a question or ask it here? It is somewhat related to this post. Thanks

What's your question?

Hi, I was trying to ask TheDurk, since he was recommended as a person who knows a lot about 4WD on 4TR. But let't try it:

I need a help in part identification/fitment confirmation. Looks like my TC actuator is dead and I need a replacement. I have used ToyotaPartsDirect ws to identify it and looks like I need 3641035040. But it costs about 1.5K new (which is insane for couple gears and electric motor), so I have decided to find an used one. The issue is that ebay doesn't seem to have one, but few of 3641035051. They look identical on pictures, but I was not able to confirm if they are interchangeable or not. Could anyone help with that? Or may be point me to some direction? Thanks.

The problem with trying to replace the transfer case shift actuator is you have to disassemble the transfer case almost entirely to replace it then you have to reassemble it and correctly orient the transfer case actuator so it functions properly. What most people do is buy a used VF3AM (multi mode) transfer case. I suggest checking car-part.com and lkqonline.com

You’ll need to find one for your year range. 96-98, 99-00, or 01-02. These are 3 different versions of multimode that are not interchangeable. For more info on this: T-case Differences (all years of 3rd gens).. transfer case, AWD, multi-mode

The other and more complicated option is to swap your transfer case to a j shift transfer case and never have to worry about another transfer case actuator again because it’s gone forever. Pretty involved if you want to do it correctly though. Driveshafts are different lengths, wiring needs to change, etc.

PS- Don’t just assume only one person has the answer to your question. There’s a lot of knowledgable folks here willing to help that know far more than I do.

Sorry, but that is not true. There are three different type of actuators (as far as I know, or may be more). I have external one with squared plug. You can take it off without even touching TC. I have just done it couple hours ago.

Anyway, the question was if those two parts are interchangeable or not. But thanks for the links - will take a look at them. It is always good to have more knowledge.

I'll be sure to let my toyota FSM know that it is wrong. The transfer case actuator assembly has a shift fork (or 2 depending) attached to the shaft. You can try swapping just the motor, but it's very difficult to time it correctly and there isn't a timing procedure for just the motor in my FSM. Good luck with that.
