4x4 sometime works

I have a 95 4runner 3.0 Automatic. Went offroading today and for the first 10 mins my H4 and L4 were working fine. Then it would not engage at all the rest of the trip. Once i got home i tried H4 and L4 and they worked fine. What would cause the 4x4 to not work aside from the ADD system? low transfer oil? any tips/ideas would be appreciated

First question would be what was the indication it wasn't working?
What were the symptoms?

Well, I got stuck. No power to the front tires what's over. I had someone outside telling me there was no spin on the front tires. It was wet rock so it was very slippery so front tires should have at least spun a bit. Also, the 2h 4l 2l lever felt very "loose". Like there was nothing connect d to it. Luckily was able to get out. After maybe 30 mins on 2h. I tried again on 4lo and and worked perfectly went trough the same place with ease. The over felt firm and you could tell the transfer case was working again

ADD would be my first bet.
It could be the t-case is dropping out of 4WD, in which case the best way to check would be try to rotate the front DS by hand when it occurs. But then that would be hard to do when you're buried in the mud.

Would low oil on tcase cause it to not work when hot?

It could.
If your shift lever is loose, maybe it wasn't all the way in and popped out of 4WD.
