5 speed auto

Anyone ever herd of someone swapping out our a340f for the newer a750f?
I think a 5 speed auto would be something worth swapping in for the better first gear and closer 2/3 gear ratios then of course probably pickup a couple MPG with 5/OD.

It will fit physically but won't work electrically. The trans ECU is the Engine ECU.

It won't know when to shift.
 
Manual shift controller? Something like radesigns. Iv herd the computer will shift it also but not going to argue to much since you have one lol
 
It would be a cool swap. But it would be one to do because you want to do it. The fuel savings vs. cost of swap wouldn't be cost effective at all.
 
You should look at [MENTION=75824]Clownmeat[/MENTION]'s build thread - he has an auto 4R and created some paddle shifters... got them functional and all. I regard this as one of the most creative and unique mods to our 3rd gens to date.

Read through his build thread, like at least 1/2 of it is just about his project. A pretty interesting read!
 
Keep in mind that those transmissions are tuned for higher horsepower motors that are attached to them.

Not fully understanding this post...
That's like saying a c6 behind a small block is going to shift differently behind a big Bock?
Not seeing any major draw backs besides cost of transmission itself.
From further research the 5vz bell should bolt to the 750.

Screw it Ill just jump on the v8 band wagon haha.
 
Boo those autos! Dump it for a 5spd manual R150F. Not a teribly hard swap. I got it done in 2days. Love it!

I said in my first post that it would fit physically.

The newer motors make power lower in the rpm range. The transmission accounts for this and shifts earlier. If it was stuck behind an early motor that made power at it higher rpms, the transmission would miss out and always up shift before it got to speed. I would feel doggish.

No, it would be like saying putting a 6th gear on a ford escort. It would dog out of power that you would be constantly shifting between 6th and 5th on every incline, or wind shift. It just wouldn't have the power to cruise.
 
Depends on the gear ratio's of course, but if that was the case the manual guys would be posting about always needing to downshift to 4th gear. That't not a complaint I've heard unless it involves towing, or an expedition equipped pig in the mountains, and then that becomes a different discussion.

Now if you are thinking of keeping the same exact shift schedule as newer engine on the 5vz, then yes you probably would have some driveability problems. But you are going to need a new way to control it in the 3rd gen anyway so you should be able to correct that portion during the swap.

Okay I understand ya now.
But I wouldn't have the stock computer controlling the shift points, I would pretty much be driving a fully manual auto having to shift through every gear.
Seems like it would suck to most and people say just swap in a 5 speed but you get rid of the clutch pedal with a full manual auto, and trust me when your at almost near vertical it sucks trying to mess with the clutch pedal gas and brake all why trying to keep your rig in the same line.

I think it would be much easier, cheaper and more fun to just learn to drive a manual.
Trust me this would be a much wiser investment of time.

Who said anything about not knowing how to drive a standard?
Autos are the future of offroad everyone is switching from standard to autos everyday. 90% of koh buggies are autos.
My a340f does almost everything I want it to do besides a better overdrive and lower first gear ratio.
Its not about being lazy either a auto is way more sufficient then a standard will ever be.
