5 tire rotation and tpms / valve stems

Shame tho. Seems like an antiquated tpms setup. There should be a reset button too.

Interesting that some 4Rs recognize a 5th wheel while others don't. Will have to test mine at rotation...

My brother and I frequently have debates ... I have always preferred to rotate 5 and he rotates 4. I don't want to have reduced capability on the spare or have to depend on a tire that has been dry rotting for 6+ years.

Not to mention that buying a tire that sits under your vehicle, unused, is a waste.

I'm going to a steel bumper with a carrier so I figure I might as well rotate 5. I would imagine it extends the life of the tires... of course getting new tires costs more but so does everything on these trucks.

That's weird because my 4th gen Limited senses the spare TPMS. Weird how they would go backwards on that.

Yep. I’ve had two 4th gens and had five sensors on both.

my 2015 limited has 5 sensors. Tire light was on from previous owner, he said one of the sensors was bad. I dropped the spare and it only had 20 psi, filled it up to 35 and no sensor since.

Another benefit of the 5-wheel rotation is you don't have any financial resistance to pick different tires when the time comes (not having to throw out an unused spare and buy/mount another matching 5th). Of course this only applies to us who upgrade to a real rim/spare.

The spare just has to be the same size, doesn't have to be the same brand/type. I've been running the same 285 spare first gen TA/KO for years and have used it twice once with 3 Blizzaks and once with 3 Destination MTs. It's almost 7 years old and doesn't show signs of dry rotting

And many tire shops don't like to sell odd numbers of tires.

I just ordered 5 new of everything, so we will see how that works out for me. Currently I have 4 sensors on 5 wheels and one of them is on the bumper. So if I can only get 4 to work... oh well, same situation I've been in for awhile. Only time it's been an issue is when the light came on and all 4 tires had good pressure. Took me a minute to remember to check the spare.

Agree. I was thinking of the spare on the rear vs underneath. But your point is still valid if not concerned with having the rear spare match the other 4.

(btw, I had a white '94 FJ80 for 20 years. Ultimately gave it up due to rust I couldn't keep up with. Worst spot was under the rear deck which I attributed to my neglect in clearing the salt captured above the spare. Hence, my plan to use a hitch carrier on the 4runner. And my rear window looked very similar to yours...)

yeah i was surprised Toyota cheaped out with the steel spare when I finally got around in installing a proper sized spare.

Our old highlander has TPMS in the spare location, kind of odd that it is not standard on the 4runner since it's toyota offroad suv. Hope the landcruiser at least has.

I like it when the spare comes with the same kind of wheel because if you destroy one, you'll always have a matching spare even if it goes out of production.

My OEM spare tire is on it’s steel wheel and stays under the truck. I do a 4 wheel rotation, front - back, same side. Just as recommended in the owner manual. Tires last for 50-70K miles, or until they’re aged out or damaged. Then buy 4 new tires. It’s easy and it works for me. The economics too.

The nice deal about the limited is they come with matching spare rim. Plan on doing 5 tire rotation once its up for new tires. Previous owner didn't know that the rim was the same, don't think they ever removed the spare.

I can confirm for sure, the 2015 limited has five tpms sensors and the ecu wants to see all five. They are not location specific. So I can rotate them around anyway I choose.

Not being location specific helps for all tire rotations, not just the 5 way.

Correct, the 4 gens (sport) had TPMS in the spare too. Mine had a slow leak...

They used to have a yellow protective coating on the black and silver spare wheels.

If I could just get the same protective coating on my lower radiator support, lol

I have 5 programmed in and rotated through on a 2017 SR5P with the spare upgraded to a matching wheel with TPMS.

I have a 2020 Limited and it has 5 TPMS and displays all 5 pressures on the dash. After doing some research, the 5th TPMS seems to be only available on the Limited models.

This is not only golden information, but also that pic is proof, love it. At 3600 miles, I got real 33's (255/80-17's) and bought a fifth TRD Off Road rim. Installed and at 9300 miles, I was a little late, I rotated. A few hundred miles later the light comes on and then I procrastinated for a few months, now it's 13100 miles and finally took it to Toyota. Finally, they are like it doesn't work, I probably should have explained a little better. But Discount Tire mounted the tire and installed what was allegedly a Toyota TMPS. Well, it wasn't, nor did they program it. Toyota was cool and didn't charge me, but they had never come across it and didn't think it was possible to program a 5th wheel. Your pic says otherwise, so all I need to do is buy a real Toyota OEM sensor, install it and have Toyota program the sensor. Thanks for much. Otherwise, every time I rotated, I was going to have to break down two tires and switch sensors. Or I could of course just put up with the idiot light, but I have a Toyota, not a Jeep, I shouldn't have random warning lights on my dash.:bat:
