TPMS with Rubber Valve Stem?

Hi all. The valve stem on one of my wheels got destroyed when rock crawling. It simply sticks out too far and was solid steel, so it just got sheered off by a rock right where you put in a new valve core. The spare wheel’s valve stem is nice, made of rubber, and flexible, but doesn’t have TPMS. Question: is it possible to put flexible rubber valve stems on factory TPMS sensors? Also, do I need to replace the TPMS sensor if the steel valve stem got sheered off?

I got rid of my TPMS a few years ago. Not worth the costs to maintain if you have several sets of wheels. The yellow light isnt a big deal.

Yes the TPMS can be repaired. You need to do some research and find shorter stems. Id stick with (assumedly) aluminum as they will def take great abuse than rubber.

Thanks. The video isn’t very helpful because my valve stem is snapped in half - around the area of where the thread for the valve core is. Also, aluminum is fine for the street but my concern is the wheel getting rubbed against giant boulders - that’s how it broke off.

If the tire didn't deflate due to this, which we don't know, and the tpms light remains off then the sensor should be fine.. if the tire won't inflate it's unsure whether the sensor was damaged or not. I made this stupid system switchable from on to off because one of the tpms batteries died and the light drove my nuts. I can't stand it even when it's functional, everytime I air down on trail I have to look at that retarded light.

Yes. I recently replaced the wheels on my RAV4 which had rubber valve stems. I asked to move the TPMS to the new wheels and the tire store said no problem. They moved the TPMS and installed new rubber valve stems. Any tire store should be able to do the same.

The tire went to 0 psi, but the sensor kept reading. The stem is basically snapped at half right at the bottom thread. It was a fun trail fix, but really just a stupid mistake on my part putting these two way valve stem caps that are quite long.

When I got new wheels I replaced the TPMS since they were 7yo. Local Auto shop that specializes in 4runners actually recommended rubber valve stem TPMS over metal for this very reason. SO, that's what I went with even though I dont offroad much.

I don't see how they are repairable.

Problem with rubber valve stems is that you can screw them up in the deep sand or sticky mud.

Going to guess you have SR5 wheels or PRO wheels, in either case there is no protection from rocks as is on the trail or off-road wheels.

There was a post on here of a guy rock crawling with trail wheels and the rocks destroyed his clear coat and you could see the wheels (he had pics) were sunk in rocks, but the trail wheels kept the valve stem protected, so aluminum would be okay on the trail wheels.

Put some trail wheels on and be good to go :dance:

The stem shouldn't be that exposed in the first place, for any type of stem. I run original OEM 2010 SR5 rims with very little offset. I love the look. I don't know what tires you're running but 33s on the OEM sr5 rim give plenty of sidewall protection.
