50K maintenance checklist - free mechanic for a few days

I pride myself in doing my own work, but unfortunately have fallen behind on giving my wife's mall crawler the love it deserves.

We are heading out of town tomorrow, but her parents are coming to stay with my daughter while we are gone. He is a lifelong farmer who has pretty impressive mechanical abilities. I've turned wrenches with him on many industrial machines.

I haven't done anything beyond changing the oil, and it just hit 50K. I figure I should leave him the following instructions and have him perform the below tasks with the transmission being the priority. Can you guys keep me honest?

Transmission fluid:

Do this one first, and follow the instructions below. I assume he can get a nice synthetic fluid at the auto parts store of his choice. Looks like he'll also need three gaskets from the dealership, and if he can't find my bottle pump he'll want to buy a new one.

Torque specs:
Drain plug - 180 lb-in/15 lb-ft (14mm)
Overflow plug - 180 lb-in/15 lb-ft (5mm hex)
Fill plug - 27 lb-ft (24mm or 15/16")

Parts:
~4 qts (per drain) Toyota ATF WS fluid - Toyota part # 00289-ATFWS
Manual says 3.2 qts for a drain and fill, but on my other Toyota I've always gotten more than what the manual said and ~4 qts has been reported in the 4th gen forum
Drain plug gasket - Toyota part # 35178-30010
Overflow plug gasket - Toyota part # 35178-30010
Fill plug gasket - Toyota part # 90301-15004

Special tools:
Toyota SST 09843-18040 (basically you just need a wire to jumper two OBD ports)
Bottle pump (to use for filling)

Transfer case:

Use the instructions below. I assume he can buy the gear oil at the auto parts store, and doesn't need the Toyota stuff.

Torque specs:
Drain plug - 27 lb-ft (24mm or 15/16")
Fill plug - 27 lb-ft (24mm or 15/16")

Parts:
SAE 75W Toyota Genuine Transfer gear oil LF or equivalent - Toyota part # 08885-81080
1.1 qts (part-time) or 1.5 qts (full-time)
Drain plug gasket - Toyota part # 90430-A0003
Fill plug gasket - Toyota part # 90430-A0003

Tips:
1) Ensure you can remove fill plug before draining
2) After filling, leave plug out and let sit ~5 minutes and re-check, add if necessary
3) Diff and xfer case gasket kit



Front and rear differentials:

Buy about five quarts of this from Advance Auto Advance Auto Parts - Down for Maintenance

And buy this from Toyota while he is getting the gaskets for the transmission.

Looks good, you might not find the 75W transfer case oil at the dealer. Amazon has it.

Wouldn't recommend touching the transmission with only 50k miles. I changed the fluid on my old 4th gen when it had 100k miles. It was a pain. These things have solid transmissions.

Get Mobil 1 for the diffs and transfer case. I was just at the dealer the other week buying gaskets for my differential oil change and I asked about the Toyota transfer case oil and he said they only have it in 5 gallon barrels.

I bought a 56K camry which was slipping from 3rd to 4th really bad at high rpm. I thuoght the transmission was toast. Started looking for parts to swap transmission. Then decided to try the cheapest repair which was DIY full 8 quarts fluid swap. Valvoline Maxlife synthetic.

Immediately shift quality was restored. Slippage was completely gone. Shifting was a bit notchier and solid but not in a bad way. It grabbed like it was supposed to.

So I've come to the conclusion that:
1. OEM fill was meant to deliver smooth seamless shifting. Because that's what new buyers expect from a brand new vehicle off the lot right?

2. The break in metals have finally contaminated the fluid to the point where unwanted slippage has occurred.

So a fluid swap is in store for the 4runner @ 75k but its definitely not that EASY if you're not familiar w/ the methods to check and adjust proper transmission level.

If your mechanic is old school it isnt just a flush and dipstick check.

Can you guys keep me honest?

Drop it off at the dealership on your way out of town, along with your "honey do" list and a pre-authorized credit card. Include instructions to call when the work is finished. When they call you about 2 hours later, you can call the father-in-law and ask him to pick it up for you..........
