5100 + stock coils or OME 884

My short term plan is to run the 5100s with ~ 2.5" front lift along with the saw coils in the rear. I would like to get some input from some one who has ran the 5100s cranked to 2.5" with stock coils and can compare that setup to 5100s with OME front coils (884?).

For now, that is how it will be setup for my wife's daily driver rig with trail/exploring/camping duties on the weekends. So on road ride quality is important for the time being.

I have heard the billies at 2.5" with stock springs can be a little stiff, how about the 884s?

In a few years I plan on a full metaltech/icon rear long travel setup along with bumpers, winch, skids, etc etc.

Aren't the OMEs actually stiffer than the stock ones?

Stock oem springs are 180lbs
SAW 1.5" lift 213lbs, 18% stiffer than stock
OME 895E 2" lift 260 lbs 44% stiffer than stock

OME 889 3" lift 260 lbs 44% stiffer than stock
Superflex 2.5" lift 218 lbs 21% stiffer than stock

Yes they are stiffer then stock. Also thanks for those specs as I was trying to find that post that had all that info... never had luck finding it again.

However, by placing the bilstein at the 2.5" setting, it is putting a lot more preload on the spring which makes it feel like a heavier rate spring.

I'm at 1.75" in front with stock springs. It still feels soft although preloading springs helped the nose dive and firm up handling in corners. Although I'll tell you it's been 5k miles and I'm considering the OME coils with my 5100's. My only gripe is its almost to soft for corners and with any real weight. I am all stock other than some emergency tools and things, along with 275 E loads. Rear stock coils with 20mm of coil spacers. I have been really considering SAW 1.5 coils and 884 fronts to help firm up a hair. Giving I would easy and happily spend money for a stage 5 Icon kit. Just can't justify for the wheeling I do.

Just my thoughts and what I have as of now. My suggestion is go with the OME 884's and SAW cause I am pretty sure I am soon. Depending the next trip I get fed up with some swaying or sagging with loaded truck.

Personally 2.5 setting on 5100's would bother my OCD and over pre loading the coil. Therefore riding firm with near no travel for big bumps. Yet alone off-roading and hoping for any up and down travel.

The 884s are good but you won't get a 3in lift. I don't have the spacer and my 5100s are at 0 (recommended). If you get a bumper ormwinch you should consider 885s..

Do the stock coils coil bind before getting maximum up travel when set at 2.5"? Not sure how you would lose travel otherwise.

How much lift did you get with the 884s? How does the ride compare to the different settings you tried with the 5100s before the 884s?

I can't vouch for 884's, but the link at Toytec specifies they only give 2" without spacer plates. I do have 885's on mine. I added them after adding a bumper and winch (~150lbs), and I ended up with right at 2" of lift with the 5100's set at 0. My ride is still very close to factory, but a little stiffer. Not objectionable, just a little sportier feeling.

While I spent most of the first year before the bumper running at 1.75" on factory springs any difference I noticed was equated to the dampening of the shocks being a little stiffer and not to preload on the springs. At least this is my take after 40 years of driving experience. YMMV

884 front springs? I keep reading they net around 2.5" with the 5100s on the lowest (stock ) setting. That's really what I am wanting...

Sometime next week. Yes I got the 2884 (latest version of the 884, pretty much the same thing).

Can anyone comment on what was implied earlier about losing suspension travel by running the 5100s at 2.5" with stock springs? Surely bilstein wouldn't make them with that setting if it was going to cause coil bind...

I think i will probably plan on running stock springs since I plan on eventually going to icons down the road. That is unless someone comes up with info that the stock springs will coil bind when set at 2.5"
