5100's Installed..A few unexpected learnings

Had (4) 5100's installed on my '14 Trail this week. Learned something a bit surprising I me. You guys may be aware and maybe it's been covered, but i haven't seen it after reading every 5100 thread i coud find in past months so thought I'd share.

The mechanic I used is steeped in building race suspensions and track cars in general, so he's very precise about what "level" really means. I requested that the adjustable front's be set to .85 to "level" the truck some, and left it at that. He measured the truck frame front and rear prior to installation. Determined it was close to level, and installed the 5100's to stock height as a result. Measured after the install and the truck ended up only 2mm higher in the rear than the front, so it was really close to "level". Obviously we had two different visions of what we were looking to achieve. Being the stand-up guy that he is, he took the truck back the next day and re-did the work to set them at .the 85" setting. Looks much better, nose dive is greatly reduced, and I couldn't be happier. He has a customer for life.

Now, I read that some reported feeling like being in a spaceship ready for takeoff when theirs were set to 1.75" with no rear lift, and this might be be why. If the frame is essentially level with 5100's set at stock setting, then if set at 1.75" the front to rear frame rake would have to be raked by the same amount, no? This may be elementary to some but wasn't to me. Given the aesthetic rake of the truck when stock, I wouldn't have expected this to be the case. However, the more I thought about it, why would Toyota build a truck with a non-level frame and canted suspension geometry. They wouldn't....makes sense now. Wheel wells cut differently between front and rear. Something to consider when looking to set the fronts at 1.75" lift with a stock rear suspension.

This is interesting to me. Please post a pic of your '14 Trail with the 5100's set at .85 in the front. Do you have stock shocks in the back still? or 5100's? No matter, but curious.

The Trail is "different" than the SR5 and just want to make a comparison.

Here is pic of my SR5 with 5100's in front set at 1.75 and rear 5100's and that is it.

@OP - did you install springs as well, or just the shocks?

I'd be curious to see a measurement from the mid point of the frame rail, say around the B pillar, to the top of the front and rear fender arches in order to see if they are equal distances.
 
This has been discussed here a few times. If you level the wheel well arches, then the body will actually be nose high. If you level the body, then the wheel well arches will look like there is a ton of rake. I think a good goal is to split the difference and try to have the rear wheel well arch about one inch higher than the front.

Replaced all 4 shocks with the 5100's.

Just installed shocks, and kept the stock springs. I'll see about getting some measurements as you've outlined above and also wheel wells to ground for the heck of it.
 
Most people are concerned with fender wheel gap which is technically completely incorrect when setting ride height. It's frame to ground, not wheel well gap that you should be looking at.
 
Were you happy with Curt? He seems like a real stand up guy. He is the first mechanic I have found in over 25 years that I really felt like I could trust.

Bilsteins at 0.85 will give the 1 inch and look almost level.
 
I have 5100's Front/Rear on my 14 TE Base. Front set at .85. With how I drive (mostly Road Queen), this was best option for me. I also, reset all Sway bar links with Polyurethane bushing and SpiderTrax spacers on all four wheels.

Today, doing 45MPH, had an 18 wheeler pull out directly in front of me. No room for panic stop so it was brake hard and swerve right on to the shoulder avoiding contact.

Absolutely no issues maintaining complete control. Avoided contact as I went by nose of truck with inches to spare. Interior and my seat however required cleaning after event. Also had some very colorful dialog communication exchange!

Bottom line is the 5100's are worth every penny. Of course, my 2 cents
 
Sorry for not getting pics or measurments up yet. Been covered up at work and home. Here's the only pic I have of it post-5100's. Getting motre pics and mesurements is on my to-do list.

Mine is about as close to asthetically level as you can get by just using shocks. I haven't checked the frame and don't really care. I didn't want visible reverse rake and I didn't want to feel like I was facing up when driving. If anything, there is still a slight visible forward rake, if anything and I absolutely do not feel like I am facing up. I had 5100's installed all around with the fronts set at 1.75" and the rear did get a tad bit of extra height with just the new shocks.

If you commonly carry a significat amount of weight in the back, or tow a lot, this is probably not the setup for you. For me, I have a tool bag in the back that weighs 40 - 50 lbs and that's it except for groceries now and then.

The years and models can and do vary so there is a small bit of luck involved with doing this mod. I went into it prepared to have the fronts reinstalled at .85 if necessary. But I got lucky.
