5th Gen 4Runner Lift Buyers Guide

now, for a really dumb question.. but how do I know for a fact that have an XREAS?
I know there should be reservoirs, I cannot see them.
However, dealer warned me that due to my sway bar system, they wouldn't be able to lift the truck.. I'm a bit confused on that end.
I should, probably, just post pictures of my suspension, eh?

Mine is Trail. You just made my day. thank you!

Aloha from Hawaii... been lurking awhile and reading a bunch. Hope to one day contribute a bit here as I do elsewhere.

16 trail with KDSS is on order. Recently sold a 07 tacoma (fairly built), and getting a vehicle I have always wanted. I understand all lift components of the tacoma, but the T4R rear (especially) is a different beast. I just mentioned that I want to do the "buy once, cry once philisophy" as I was just about to grab a Icon set-up after spending enough money changing suspensions that I could easily have afford that in the first place.

Trail is coming in, as well as the matte black TRD pro rims, and pelfreybilt sliders and weatherteach mats will probably beat the 4R here.. Front Runner rack will also be added soon, and thinking about doing 275/70/17s right off the bat.

Want get a bit more weight abilities in the rear as when we go camping in the mountains here we need to bring everything (no running water).

I read somewhere about some OME885s in the front (with stock shocks, and some type of coil in the rear (with rear shocks) that will level it out, and get me going for awhile..
With the 4R, is it advisable to get new UCAs with any lift more than 2.5" (like the tacoma)?

When I find my money tree, Icon stage ( ) will be the final setup..

Thanks..

Don't want to start a new thread, so hopefully this gets seen and answered....

Anyone run into failed warranty claims as the dealer says "it's because of the lift"? I know they are supposed to prove the lift caused or contributed to the failed part, but I'm hearing about them just flat out turning their head more and more....

Need advise on Bilstein 5100 setup

So I have gone through MANY threads about Bilstein settings and done extensive research on suspension setups on here. I almost have my mind made up but want to get some advise from others before I pull the trigger, thought this might be the place to ask...

I purchased a set of 5100s (adjustable fronts) and can't decide which route to go.

Here is what I plan on doing:

Opt. 1: cheaper route ($350-$565)

Front- 5100s @ 1.75"
Rear- 5100s w/ SAW 1.5" coils
I'm thinking that I might have TOO much rake than what I prefer. I want to go 1.75" in front with STOCK rear coils, but then i will be nose-high if i ever load up the back or tow (from what others have posted).

Opt. 2: ($565 or $1,100 w/ UCAs) More expense up front, but possibly the better option.

Front- 5100s @ 2.5", stock coils, Camburg BJ UCAs
Rear- 5100s w/ SAW 1.5" coils OR Toytec Superflex 2" coils

I know that others have ran 2.5" setting in the front without UCA's but i don't want to sacrifice road performance, so i would likely go the UCA route even though it would add much more cost. I have seen others w/ this setup and SAW coils and looks PERFECT to me with 2.5 up front, but not sure how this will level out when loaded. Would i be better off going w/ a 2" coil or would this add too much rake?

Hope others can help weigh in! sorry for so many questions but its hard to decide!! I would rather not have to run UCAs, and go with option 1, but if i ever decide i want to raise it higher, than I will have to use UCAs.

Hi,

Looking to lift my 2014 SR5. I already have bilstein 5100's enroute but might as well change out the coils as well. Anyone have a good recommendation on some fair priced coils. Probably going to do about 5% off roading so I don't need anything fancy just something better than stock.

Also is there anyone in south orange county that can help with good install locations or persons that are good with installs?

Thanks!

I was under impression that you need to move to aftermarket UCAs after 3'+ lift?

I have an OME lift and still running with stock UCA. Does it rub, very slightly on the mudflap (running 285/70R17) on full lock/stuffed. other than that 0 rub.

So basically can you run without them, Yes. But your alignment won't be on spec.

Thanks, good to know! I already purchased the 5100s, but now I just need to make up my mind on what settings or spring combos...

Leaning towards Eibach 112-620 coils in front, struts set at 0; and SAW 1.5 coils in the rear. This should give me a very slight rake, which is what I want.

Not sure if I should just bite the bullet and get some aftermarket UCAs too along with the coils... or do I chance it and hope the alignment shop can get the caster within spec using factory uca's??

Rust/Flat Spots on Steering Knuckles?

Anyone know what these flat/rusted spots are for on the steering knuckles? Why didn't Toyota paint these at the factory, and should I paint them now?

ToyTec Boss 2.5/Total Chaos installed by the great folks at Rebel Off Road. Highly recommended. (Rebel Off Road).

That bottom one is for standard suspension sway bar linkage.

The UCA's are easy to add later with the only downside a second alignment charge. I drove with 2.5" up front for a year with stock uca's, yes it's better now with UCA's but it was fine around town and just a little twitchy on the highway. I was NOT quite in spec as caster was on the edge, but it wasn't bad. The SAW coils ride well, many report more than 1.5" from them.

Thanks for your input. I decided to do it right the 1st time and get UCAs too.

Going to run a similar suspension set up to yours. I just ordered: 5100s (all 4), OME 884 front coils (2.5"), Camburg Moog UCAs, and SAW 1.5" rear coils. Also got Method NV wheels and BFG K02 tires to go with it.

Planning to install next weekend!

Always a good idea to get it all at once and do the install. I should have done it all at once. For me, I wasn't ready to spend $600 for UCA, my alignment is still in spec with 2.5" lift and my SAW is at 1.5" lift. I wish it was closer to the 2" lift like some other had experience. Planning to switch them out to ICON overland spring but by doing so, I would need my front to sit at 3" which will required me to get a UCA. So definitely, I should have gotten the UCA to begin with. =/
