5th Gen 4Runner Lift Buyers Guide

I believe for everyday use, it wouldn't matter. If you wheel often as a sport, you would benefit. The UCA will allow better articulation. I'll be honest, I'm only considering the UCA because of looks since I'm yay high with the Icon overland and not diggin the current look. I had SAW but was too low when loaded. Question would be, what do you plan to do with your 4Runner and how high you honestly want the lift to be? But if you have the funds, just get it and be over with it or if you have 100k + miles, I would also consider getting it.

Thanks guys.
I’ll call Wheeler’s tomorrow. Prolly don’t really “need” it. The way I’m thinking about it is this. The vehicle currently has 55k on it. I’m basially replacing the whole suspension w/ new parts. Since the UCA seems to be a weak point on a lifted truck, ball joints are wear items, and the suspeion I am installing will perfrom better. Seems like a good idea.
Now.... which one? I’m liking the Camborg Uniball.
I was warned by a wise man that this lift was going to cost me more than I thought. He was right!

So I re-read the posts about UCA’s & all of the manufacturer specs I went w/ Total Chaos Uni-Ball UCA. Currently at 5% off at Wheeler’s.

not far how much in the hole you are, but it seems you eventually worked your way up to this lift.

BOSS Suspension System for 10+ 4Runner, FJ and GX460

After much research, this is the route I am going.

I'm also going with this lift. I'm just trying to decide if i want the Camburg UCAs instead of the two options Toytec gives you.

I'm now trying to decide if i want to get some friends together and install ourselves or take it to a shop. Decisions, decisions...

Hey guys have a question hate to bug but just bought a 2.5" billet spacer and diff drop will I need a rear spacer or should I be ok measurements are 34"f /36.5 rear driver side and 34.5"f/ 37"rear passenger side so that's 2.5 " factory rake will it be ok or should I have them send a 2" ? Or am I going to have to run a rear spacer anyways , if so I lost the link that had them for the 5th gen on Amazon

Also I called the dealer talked to them they said you only need ucas for over 3" 3"& under are fine they said they do it all the time

What risk or accelorated wear w/ lift please?

Hey folks,
I’m going to sound like a real weenie here but I need some sound advice please.
After much thought and some research I decided to pull the trigger and ordered a lift including Bilstein 5100 all around, front set to 0 w/ 2 1/2” Toytech lift springs up front (preassembeled as a strut by Wheeler’s w/ new bushings etc, 2” OME lift springs in back, diff drop & Total Chaos Uniball UCAs.
As many folks here that lift their vehicles and as I see on the road, I had a couple people spook me. They told me that I would regret lifting as it is more trouble than it’s worth. They implied safety risks and accloerated wear that would signifcantly shorthen the life of my 2011 4Runner SR5.
Are they right? Are their any safety risks or excessive life-shortening wear as a direct result of a 2 1/2" - 2” lift?
I lost sleep over this and am struggeling w/ buyer’s remorse. Even considering taking the shipping and restock hit on shipping them back.
Can folks w/ mechanical knowledge & experience please confirm or refute these concerns?
Thanks!

Got to live your life man. My lift is the single best thing I've done to my vehicle. Life is too short to be a weenie.

Let me answer your questions:

"Is there safety risks by adding a lift?"
If the lift is installed correctly the only safety risk is having a higher center of gravity than the stock 4Runner. This will change handling characteristics a bit. Now, if you add bigger tires or different offset wheels you might have to do a BMC (body mount chop) to keep these from rubbing. The body mount, stock, is designed to deflect the wheel and tire downwards in the event of a crash to keep it from encroaching into the cabin. That is a concern because cutting it will mean it could not protect as well in an accident.

"Is there accelerated wear by adding a lift?"
Yes but not because of the lift. Most people who lift also add larger and heavier tires, higher offset wheels and/or wheel spacers. This can lead to accelerated bearing wear.

"Is there more maintenance required by adding a lift?"
Yes. The OEM components will provide the most reliability and durability for the longest period of time. Aftermarket components, while improving your off road performance could wear faster. Depending on component selection, your shocks will need to be rebuilt. Your UCA could need the uniball replaced, etc. More grease points, accelerated bushing wear, etc.

"Is there an efficiency loss after adding a lift?"
Yes. The heavier, larger diameter tires along with the vehicle being higher could cause a significant loss of efficiency. If you currently average 18 mpg overall you will probably lose 10% after lifting and adding wheels and tires. If you add skids and bumpers and rack you will lose an additional 10%.

"Is there going to be more problems after adding a lift?"
Probably. There are very few complaints (using the unscientific data of this forum) that arise from the stock 4Runner suspension. Most of the suspension complaints you read about here like rubbing, noise and wear come from guys who have lifted their vehicle.

Now, I have honestly laid out all concerns you could have from adding a lift. Is it worth it? Only you can answer this yourself. Some people don't care because to them it is worth it for the "look" or the off road performance increase. Those are the only two reasons people lift it BTW. Hope this helps.

Honestly, I am more concerned with some inattentive idiot texting while driving running into me and destroying my ride after I have made all the effort to make the changes. It's already happened to a couple members in here. I am fairly certain the financial income window that allowed me to do mine is probably closed at this stage in my life, so I would not be able to recreate what I have now. But yes, you have to accept that some components will have more wear and tear on anything that is changed from factory specs. Anyone who wants to do this kind of work should really have deeper pockets or learn some mechanical skills.

I'm looking up some of these lifts and many of them have different stages. What does each stage signify?

More $$$$$$!

At each stage (usually referring to the company Icon) something is also usually added to the lift setup, such as UCA's, extended travel shocks, larger diameter shocks, remote reservoirs, different springs, etc... If this is Greek to you like it was me before joining the forum read this entire lift buyers guide thread on this forum. Also you can look up the differences at the Icon vehicle dynamics website.

In case anyone is curious, here is what I went with.

Goal: support shrockworks bumper and improve overall ride quality. I am 95% on road with the occasional "off the beaten path" camping trips.

Decision: After talking to John @ Metaltech and the guys at Icon and Toytec, I settled on the ICON 2.5 coilover with remote reservoir and CDVC, ICON 2" rear springs with ICON 2.0 rear shocks. Since I have no intention on going above a 2" lift, I did not opt for the upper control arms.

The Icon set up was more than the Toytec setup and I purely went with Icon based on the reviews and the level of support other customers received.

This is almost exactly what I want to do. Is that the stage 2? Please let me know how you like this set up. About how much did it cost?

I got everything from MetalTech 4x4. I got the scratch and dent standard travel with CVC Valve. I believe they have the non-cvc valve but with remote reservoir in stock. I paid around 1800 for everything.

This is not the stage 2....this is a combo of the stage 4 and stage 2 without the upper control arms.

Talk to John over at MetalTech...he is great!

Thank you! May I ask why you decided to mix and match? What's the extra gain?

Thank you! May I ask why you decided to mix and match? What's the extra gain?

to be honest, there really wasnt much extra gain. Doing the mix and match, I was able to get a higher stage of set of front coilovers for near the same price.

Ill be honest, I'll never use the front coils to their full potential.
