5th gen 4runner squeaky brake sound

read this thread, and the other thread. Although this is described as a "normal" sound by Toyota, it is rather b.s. that they seem to dismiss it with a "get used to it" attitude. I have an 2011 TE and have an aquaintance with a 2011 limited. Both vehicles have this "stepping on a wet sponge" sound. So, it seems like probably all do. This quite simply is unacceptable

Agreed! I have a 2011 SR5 and a friend who has a 2011 Limited, both make the noise. I sure wish I had come across this forum and thread before I made the 40 min. drive and spent over an hour at the Toyota dealer, only to be told that the brake was funcitioning as it should be and that they went out on the lot and looked at a new 4 Runner and it was doing the same thing. Grrr...
 
Bought a new 4R TE yesterday and this was the first thing I've noticed on my way home. Turning on the radio helped with masking this noise ;)
I guess we just have to get use to it...
 
brake hissing

This is not normal at all.i have a 96 4 runner that never made the sound untill the brake booster started going out and my wife almost wreck with kids in car.Toyota will always say it is normal even when it is not.i put new booster on and the sound stoped but now it is making it again and the brakes have stopped working again.I am a mechanic and i have a friend that is a cert toy mechanic and he says it is not normal.get it checked out by someone other then a toyota dealer trust me they will get worse.Toyota also told me that the a/c compressor will make a loud noise it is normal.to me it sounds like the bearings are going out and guess what,the bearings are shot and compressor locked up and now they will not cover it.i love toyotas but the dealers will screw u over unless the warrenty is up then its not normal.thank about it:uzi:
 
Actually all of you need to take the vehicle to the dealer and demand that it be reviewed by the regional representative and have that person send in a ticket the Toyota Engineers. Otherwise they will not do a thing and if they receive lots of complaints as described then and only then will they put out a fix….. Also you should file a complaint with the Motor Safety Board. If enough complaints are filed they will put pressure on Toyota for a fix. Otherwise as stated they simply hide behind the “ you are the only one complaining”.

the wet shoe sound is normal. lexus gx does it too, its probably the spring mechanism in the brake arm. get down there are take a look and you'll see

What kind of vehicle did you drive or own before this? Obviously not a Toyota truck.Did it not do it when you test drove one and then started doing it after you bought one?

Same brake systems that were used in the 4th Gen 4Runners since at least 2003. I thought the same thing when I bought my 06 4Runner til I got used to it.They STOP good and that's what any safety board cares about.Saved me a bunch of times. They feel EXACTLY like my 06.

The system is called EBD
Electronic Brake-force Distribution
A sophisticated electronic system designed to minimize stopping distances by maximizing braking power to the wheels with the most grip. It replaces the conventional load sensing proportioning valve. The latest Toyota EBD can adjust the fore/aft brake balance according to vehicle load and the right/left brake balance if the brakes are applied during cornering.

Please go make another video for our entertainment........That last one was classic!lol

Mine has the same hissing sound also. Today I even noticed when the wind shield wiper move, I feel the vibration transmit to brake pedal, maybe these days I pay too much attention to brake, anyway it is too annoying.... :ybrick:

Wait a minute. Your telling us that your windshield wipers, when turned on, make you brake pedal vibrate? Seriously?
 
I have the normal "squishy" sound in the pedal. I also get a loud squeel after the vehicle's been sitting for a few hours in cold weather (0 to -15).


Here's a video of what it sounds like. The dealer de-glazed the brakes but it still does it. My SR5 does it too so I'm not worried. It doesn't do it after the first depression of the brakes. Might have to turn the sound up a bit. Squeel is at 20 seconds...

Darn...I saw some new posts and I thought there was a fix. It's not too bad when I'm alone but annoying when I have the family in the car w/o the radio blasting. It was really bad when I was driving home from a Christmas trip and the kids were in the back asleep and I had to sit in traffic...just headr the noise constantly!
 
Neither my current 5th Gen or my previous 4th Gen makes / made a noise. Should I take it to the dealer and complain?
 
2011 SR5 owner, have 12,000 miles on, and have noticed the "squishy" brake noise since the day i drove it off the lot. a little different at first, but i've gotten used to it.
 
Mine went away around 17,000. I always assumed it was something that needed to be broken in. Glad to hear mine wasn't the only runner that had that noise.
 
My 2020 does it too. Was planning on having the dealer check it out on first service. Didn’t realize it was a common problem
