5th GEN 4RUNNER TRAIL W/KDSS

I have a quick question for all of you out there, I was told by a shop they have to detach the KDSS (2016 TRAIL) to install Bilsteins, is this true? Can someone shed some light on this for me? Also if it is true is there a lift I should get that would not interfere with it?

My understanding is that KDSS does need to be touched if you plan on installing any type of lift. There are threads here where others have documented the process and that process has gotten easier as others have learned the tricks of re-connecting KDSS.

Not sure that helps though if a shop is doing the install.

Perfect that is what I had thought all along, looks like I am going to need to change shops.

If you want a shop to do it then best take your time and find someone who is aware of KDSS..and is willing to read some of the material you provide to help them along. Last thing you need is the shop mechanic calling you because a KDSS piston is laying on the ground in a pool of fluid.. That's a repair you won't want to pay for.

I've come to the conclusion that I will do my lift install myself with the help of a friend. I've worked with my local shops on my Scout and they are ALL incompetent.

Perfect that is what I had thought all along, looks like I am going to need to change shops.

Technically, yes, they do have to touch the KDSS, unless they can fit some sort of spring compressor in there, which I doubt. Reason is to allow the lower control arm to swing down to remove the shock.
