5th Gen Aluminum Roof Rack Using OEM Siderails: NiseRack

 
I've only had LFD Off Rack cross bars on stock rails And then switched to an entire LFD roof rack, so I can't really compare. But due to the design of these aluminum cross bars, do they retain water? If so, would there be any unforeseen issues? Perhaps I'm overthinking it.

I had a Prinsu rack and K9 rack for a while. Both uses aluminum T-slot. They retain a little bit of water afterwards but it dries up pretty quickly on a warm sunny day. I wouldn't worry about it. Plus you're still using OEM side rails so there won't be any water intrusion.

What SN_85 said is correct. They may retain a little water but it shouldn't cause any issues. If the water was to seep out at the end of the bar it would just run down the face of the bracket and drop harmlessly on your roof. It wouldn't even have access to the inner part of your roof rail (which is open to the weather anyway).

If corrosion was an issue I understand. The only part that could possibly rust is zinc phosphate coated and is made for this type of application. Everything else won't rust or corrode due to the properties of the material.

What was your concern specifically? Maybe I can answer that better.

This is correct. I’m working out the prototype now. Once I’m satisfied a few folks will get them to test. Once I get their feedback I’ll list them for sale.

The rack is on! All I can say is, it is awesome. Fitment and design are right on. Rooftop tent will be going on next, and I am sure it will hold. This thing is solid. Only issue I had was one of the holes on the beam from TNutz was not drilled far enough in. Just need a shorter bolt for that one.

Good job on the installation.
For that short hole in the crossbar, maybe it’s plugged with some aluminum shavings from the TNutz drill/tap process. One of mine came that way also, but I was able to clean it out with a thin probe. You could try cleaning up the threads with a 1/4 - 20 Tap. If the hole is actually not drilled deep enough you would need to first drill it deeper before tapping it. I believe the drill bit to use is a 13/64 inch. [MENTION=176262]Eitek1[/MENTION] will know for sure what to do.

So glad you like it. As I’ve said, I worked on this a while to ensure everything was right before I shipped anything. It’s hard to describe just how solid this thing is without seeing one in person.

Sorry about the short threaded hole on the crossbar. The threads are a 1/4-20 pitch. The holes already exist in the crossbars Tnutz just threads them. Chances are they didn’t run the tap deep enough.

If you pick up a 1/4-20 tap and some WD-40 you can run the tap in and you won’t even have to remove it from the roof. You’re also fine with a shorter bolt. You probably don’t lose much strength.
 
Tent on. Fits perfectly. Tent rails sit about 3 inches from the sides, so zero flex on the crossbeams.
