5th gen auto running boards - troubleshooting

Has anybody demystified the repair for auto running boards? The motors seems to be fine, but whatever controls them - switch / actuator, seems to be faulty.
They work sometimes, meaning you open the door and they extend, close the door they retract.....but sometime they start the motion and retract, almost like "pinch / crush protection" on a sunroof, or side window?

I'm told they will stop if there is an obstruction they will reverse direction. I would check to see if there is any binding or obstructions.
