those surfaces are really rough afterwards. they should have designed it so that those areas has a stainless surface. If maybe I waited another year to replace my pads, my caliper may have seized. thank goodness, I replaced it early. by the way, my pads were at 50000 miles. I've never cleaned it though and I used a ceramic brake pads previously, doesn't make too much dirt in there. 
The inner pistons on my driver's side front caliper have seized up and required replacement each year for the past three years. I would say they need to be cleaned and greased every six months based on my experience.
