5th Gen Calipers

those surfaces are really rough afterwards. they should have designed it so that those areas has a stainless surface. If maybe I waited another year to replace my pads, my caliper may have seized. thank goodness, I replaced it early. by the way, my pads were at 50000 miles. I've never cleaned it though and I used a ceramic brake pads previously, doesn't make too much dirt in there. :)

The inner pistons on my driver's side front caliper have seized up and required replacement each year for the past three years. I would say they need to be cleaned and greased every six months based on my experience.

What grease does everyone use? The real Toyota stuff lithium soap grease glycol grease, or something like SlyGlyde

I used the grease included with my new akebono pads. I don't know what it is. all I know is it's black and very thick. you can actually buy it at advance auto part.

Those two are used by lots of mechanics.

I used this as recommended by Eric the Car Guy:

See what is cheapest or best for your uses. All 3 should work.

Im looking at swapping out the rear calipers here at the end of summer. Are there any advantages in going with 5th gen for those ad well? Would I need the 5th Gen rotors? I unfortunately did the limited upgrade on the front of my SR5 right before this thread was made.

This is excellent.. thankyou... I too have been a victim of seized calipers on my 05 Sport edition. I have replaced 3 of the 4. If or when a front seizes again, ill be doing this upgrade.

Also, I used these raybestos rotors which have been on for the last year, have seen everything northeast winters, hard stops, constant sand at the beach and mud from offroading. They still look and feel brand new.

Raybestos R-300--The ultimate upgrade, the R-300 series features an S-Groove slot design that maximizes pad-to-rotor contact for stronger bite, smoother braking, and increased pad life. Black fusion coating gives a clean, finished look, while the grey fusion coating can withstand 300 hours of saltwater exposure and reduces rust for optimal airflow and cooling. Non-directional rotation means it can be used on all four corners of the vehicle. R-300 is designed for high-performance vehicles, work trucks, fleets, and family vehicles with towing capabilities.

The only disadvantage of doing a 5th gen upgrade at the back is that you'll have mismatched parts. This is more of a convenience issue than anything else - maybe not worth making the switch. Unless you're thinking of selling - this kind of mechanical mismatch could soften the price a bit.

084Runnah, thanks for trying this out and sharing with everyone here.

I finished my fronts today and they turned out great!

If I can nail down my ABS / VSC warning light problem (that pre-dated this swap) I'll be able to really judge the improvements. I am really looking forward to seeing how these compare to my stock brakes, especially when towing!

And if anyone else is still wondering, here's a picture of the 4th gen sport edition rotors next to the 5th gen rotors (fronts):

The sport edition 13WH caliper next to the 5th gen 14WA caliper:

Thanks again for the great idea! If my Napa calipers in the rear give me any trouble down the road, I may just eat the lifetime warranty and swap to these. :D

So everyone keeps mentioning the 4th gen sport and limited. This means the 5th gen will NOT work on my 4th gen SR5?

It will work if you have 17 inch wheels to clear the larger caliper and rotor. You may need to bend/cut or upgrade the the dust shields to the ones on the Limited so that the rotors don't rub. Other than that, it appears to be a straight bolt-on replacement.

So it looks like the 5th gen rears also have bigger pistons compared to the 4th gen. Looks like I know what Im changing as soon as it drops below 100degrees here.

So I have the tiny brakes from the factory (my runner came with 16" wheels) would this conversion be worth the cost? My brakes are in need of some work and I'd like to upgrade them a little while at it. Would I actually be able to tell a noticeable difference in stopping power with these 5th gen calipers? I don't have any frozen calipers right now I don't think, I'm just wanting to upgrade my stopping power.

Unless you go with bigger wheels they wont fit. I personally just upgraded my SR5 brakes to the limited brakes. I did that a few weeks before this thread came out. I did it as a preventative measure to replace them before my old ones could seize. That and I flushed the fluid and replaced all the rubber lines with steel so I figured why no change them out as well.

Yeah, I'm running 17 inch 5th gen SR5 wheels already...I'm going to be replacing both cv axles soon and figured while I'm in there might as well do brakes too. Just can't decide whether to get all new calipers and rotors and everything, or just upgrade rotors and pads since my calipers seem to be fine...I wouldn't be opposed to upgrading to newer better calipers but I'd want to know that I'd actually feel a difference in braking before doing so. I also plan to upgrade to all stainless lines while I'm working on the brakes. Did you notice any improvement with the limited/sport brake upgrade?

My bad I read that as you had 16" wheels. If you upgrade you need to do rotors and caliper, I believe the pads are the same but why use old ones if you are getting all new hardware. I didnt notice any difference but I never have had to use the brakes at full stop and I also have never had to tow anything other than my buddies jeep once (before the upgrade). So I couldn't really tell you if there is much of a difference. I will say for normal every day driving there wasn't any. I did this more so because it wasnt much more expensive than replacing it with SR5 calipers and I wanted to replace them before it became an issue. Im not sure how long after the 4runners came out that the freezing caliper problem came to light but if they fixed it for the 5th gens then it might be worth doing before an issue arises.

If you're getting rotors and pads I would just upgrade to the 5th gen calipers. After the core return it would t cost you much more. I had my rotors turned and got new pads a few months ago only to have my calipers seize right after. Complete waste of money as now I am doing the 5th gen swap, which I would have done in the beginning had I known it was possible.
