5th Gen Calipers

So if I understand this correctly, you can upgrade to the 5th gen calipers and keep your 4th gen rotors if you haze the sport model?

Also, the primary reason for the upgrade is no more failed calipers?

For optimal performance, front rotors should be from the 5th gen as they are thicker and can dissipate heat much better preventing warping.

The rear rotors I would recommend from the 4th gen as there was a difference in the center circle diameter.

I've had the 5th gen brakes for a year and almost a half without any issues. I actually enjoy the extra braking power at times I had to make an emergency stop

Dropped my truck off at the shop this morning for the upgrade, and they called me and said the rotors centric120.44174 and centric120.44175 were too small, and if installed the pads would only maybe have half the contact with the rotor? I have the SR5 and got all new pads, rotors, and calipers? Why is this not setting up properly for me? As of right now I am having them machine the front rotors for now and I guess order a larger rotor?

That's odd. I also have an '06 SR5 and installed Centric 12044174 on the front without any problems.

Tried for my first time to replace the brakes last week without success as I thought all the Limited models came with the smaller rotors. That kind of bummed me out and not off to a very promising start.

Figured I'd ask someone who has done it before with success before messing up on round two.

Long thread and I've read most of it but still having second thoughts. So this is my attempt to clear up any confusion. Here are my questions.

- Are "5th gen" (assuming 2009 - current) front calipers and rotors a direct with no modifying anything? I have the 13.3' brakes up front.

- If calipers are a direct fit, should I use 4th or 5th gen rotors.

- I bought OEM Toyota front pads online Part No. 04465-35290 accompanied with proper shim kit Part No. 04945-35120. Will these work with 5th gen rotors and calipers.

- I plan on changing to steel brake lines once I get my facts straight, any problems here?

- In your experience, are there any caveats I should be aware of?

Much appreciated!

CALIPERS ARE DIRECT BOLT ON. ITS LATE AND I CAN'T FIND IT BUT AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE 17" RIMS AND THE LARGER ROTORS ALREADY, EVERYTHING IS FINE. THERES DIFFERENCES IN THE MODELS (I HAVE A LIMITED, ALL WAS GOOD) SOME PPL REPORT HAVING TO BEND THE DUST SHIELD, I DIDN'T.

5TH GEN FOR FRONTS 4TH GEN FOR REARS

PADS ARE THE SAME FOR 4TH & 5TH GEN

DO IT. WORTH IT. 6 LINES TOTAL, 2 FRONT, 4 REAR

- In your experience, are there any caveats I should be aware of?

SOME PPL THINK THERE'S GREATER PEDAL TRAVEL DUE TO LARGER BORE IN 5TH GEN CALIPERS. I CAN'T TELL A DIFFERENCE. THERE WAS ALWAYS A LOT OF TRAVEL. BLEEDING PROPERLY SEEMS TO BE A PAIN. LOTS OF OPINIONS BETWEEN FRONT FIRST / LAST. I HAD TO RUN THREE BOTTLES AND BLEED BACK AND FORTH OVER AND OVER.

MY BRAKING FEELS HARDER BETTER FASTER STRONGER. EVEN IF ITS JUST A FEELING, I'M MORE CONFIDENT IN THE SYSTEM.

Much appreciated!

ANSWERS IN QUOTE, hope that helps. if you get stuck with PNs I have a spreadsheet left over.........

I have a 2008 4Runner Limited V8 and I put on 5th gen front calipers, 5th gen brake pads Akebono and Centric front rotors from a 2015 4Runner. Rear I used 5th gen calipers, 5th gen brake pads Akebno and 4th gen rotors. Seamless install without any complications and it works better then my old set up. I read some threads where users had issues with stainless steel brake lines not lining up properly and just a pain in the butt. Stick with OEM as they are fine and we are not driving race cars. After all is done you will need a good bleed for the brake fluid, search for a thread on how to bleed properly and you will be fine.

And if you have trouble bleeding, PM me. I'm pretty sure we have got the soft/long pedal issue figured out.

why wouldnt you use shims? thats part of the design of the caliper... get some shims.. put some caliper grease on them and get them in there..

OEM pads didn't come with them so I didn't think I needed them. Now I know they're separate.

I don't have a jack in the city.....think I can crawl underneath, slide the pads out and install the shims? There is a fair amount of clearance.

Actually in think they should have came with them? I got akbono premium pads and it came with all shims

Thank-you so much. Super helpful. What year model 5th gen did you use for part numbers?

Whelp. I did my rears today. 5th gen calipers and 4th gen rotors with new pads. I just used 4th gen pads but they are the same. I flushed with 2 liters of dot4.

It went well. I had never done any work on brakes before and it wasn't too bad. A little trial and error was involved. Also I had air tools which really helped for the 17mm bolts that hold the calipers on.

One more thing. I did use the motive brake bleeder which I thought was going to be somewhat of a gimmick but it really did work for bleeding and ultimately flushing the system. I had to build out a wooden fitment piece to work around the skid control. Looks Jankey but ended up working.

The pulsing is gone and I am happy. Will be doing my fronts soon but they are not necessary so I will wait.

Thanks for the 411 everyone. Preshyate ya.

After you bleed your brakes you need to turn the vehicle off and do 40 full depress and release of the brake pedal. Then turn the vehicle on and give it 2 minutes you should notice the pedal being a lot firmer now. I would do it after you get the fronts done, I also used motive and this is the worst brake booster design I have seen so far. But I was able to get the chain through a small hole under the reservoir and make it work without any special adapters. I used close to 160 ounces for all of my calipers to get a good flush in :) Glad to hear all went well
