5th Gen Calipers

Did you do the proper bedding procedure? I did so carefully, that I never let my brake pads touch a stopped rotor at any time for at least 2 weeks. I would slow to about 2mph then drift to a stop in neutral everywhere I went. It was a pain in the ass but I hate the pulsating brakes. It is essential to do the proper bedding procedure, however I'd say I went overboard for perfection.

I bedded mine for over an hour one night

I did what you did. Keep in mind this didn't start until months after and it's only occasionally, not always. I might try the bedding process again.

Did anyone else have a problem with the ABS system after they did the swap? I did the rear and it was fine then did the front and it is throwing codes, says the harness and forgein matter on top of the sensor, cleaned it off and still didn't fix it, bout to swap the harness (wire) and see if that fixes it.. any help would be appreciated

Hey guys, I have read a lot on this topic and wanted to do this upgrade.

Just to clarify, everything is bolt on correct? I have a 2006 sr5 lifted with wheel spacers and 18" wheels.

Can I install 5th generation rotors, calipers and pads with little to no issues? ONLY DOING THE REAR AS OF NOW. Any help would be appreciated I want to order the parts today!

No problems here.

Could be some crap down in the hole. I'm sure you checked that.

You can test the wires. Sometimes they get smashed. It's easy to rewrite them if the wire is damaged. Some posts on here about it.

I damaged my plug in the harness hitting some snow. Was having a lot of intermittent abs codes when it rained. I zip tied and duct taped it for a temp fix. Has been fine for 6 mo.

What is the driving symptom of a seized caliper?

It seems like some never even knew that their piston(s) were seized until it was time to do brakes and they had the caliper apart, which is surprising to me. I would have expected it to be obvious.

My 2006 4Runner has 130K and on stock calipers, never a problem.

It starts with a hot brake smell. Then pulsing of the pedal due to warping caused by overheating of the rotor. Poorly installed wheels can also contribute to warping. The visual signs can include bluing of the rotor and uneven pad wear (pads worn at a slant)

Pulled the trigger on this yesterday. Had an issue with the braking system since I bought it. Had a scary stop recently and the pedal just doesn't feel like anything I've ever dealt with in any vehicle. Total lack of confidence for me. Got calipers/rotors/pads/SS lines. Hoping I can con a friend with some food or beer to help.

Follow up post for my previous issue- took it to another shop, no fitment issues at all- brake rotor shield did need to be bent quite a bit- as my 4R had SR5 brakes originally- so these rotors are much larger.

So far brake performance is great. No steering wheel shake under braking! (knock on wood)

I've been playing with cars for 2 decades and every time I take a chance on the parts store brake parts (Centric, Raybestos, etc) I always regret it in the long run.

Wondering if anyone has done the 5th gen brake swap with oem rotors/calipers? I wonder what the price difference is between oem and Centric?

Also, when it comes to 4th gen rear rotors, are there any differences between SR5, Sport, and Limited? I'm planning on sticking with new 4th gen rear rotors due to the bore size difference. Hubcentricity is important to me.

I'm also wondering the same thing.

I did this exact swap on my previous 06 and had squeaking every time I would reverse, not sure what centric part would of caused it but it never stopped even after 20k miles. Now doing it again, I would gladly pay a little more for OEM quality.

Did you use semi-metallic pads?

If I'm not mistaken OEM pads are ceramic and semi-metallic pads are notorious for squeaking.

Yes I agree they are known to be the best, it maybe possible you have bit of foreign matter that got stuck in the pad/s at some point?

Don't think so, had someone take a look plus it would go away if I pressed in the brakes hard in reverse. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with centric calipers and Toyota OEM rotors and pads. New Toyota calipers are ridiculously expensive.

So I just had new Centric Calipers, OEM pads, and 5th gen OEM rotors installed on my 08. I noticed the pedal travels much further to the floor before the brakes grab now. Has anyone else experienced this after the swap? I'm guessing I either need to give them some time to bed, or my mechanic didn't bleed the system properly?

Wonder if there's any particular reason why only rear 5th gen coated calipers are available (you can get both front and rear coated calipers for 4th gen).

You may need a rebleed, but this usually works:

Start reading at post #34:

I had the exact same issue.

Hope this helps.

You have to pump it sloooooooowly.

Like hold for 30 seconds, release for 30 seconds. So that would take a while, and I know it seems stupid. But it works. It gets all the teeny bubbles out from inside the system.

It's pretty common.

We seriously need to sticky this one.

Make sure you go sloooow!

Thanks Slowgoat, that did the trick! Still dumbfounds me how you can bleed the system without opening a bleeder. I have a diesel truck that has a hydroboost. When I replaced the rear wheel cylinders, I don't remember having to go through this.

Thanks Again,
Brandon

Nice!!

Glad to help. I was pretty despondent when it happened to me. And it's an easy fix.

I see a lot of people with this issue, and this almost always takes care of it.

Rock on!
