5th Gen Calipers

The other take on that is they're still running relatively low time/low mileage/new calipers so they're not seeing it yet.

My first though is they will soon enough, mwhahaha. But I don’t wish frozen calipers on anyone. It’s unsafe, especially engaging ABS, wears pads prematurely and is just a pain to deal with.

How much has changed in the design? I haven’t inspected them up close to see any differences.

Maybe but guys with 2010-13 should behaving some problems , that said I replaced my whole setup on my 11'& son's 05 so not a good judge ! Have to be guys with over 100k on older 5ths & in snow/ice/salted roads !

One plausible theory. I'm not sure what the material of caliper/pistons are, maybe someone can chime in.

Here are some photos I took when I went to change my front pads (saw the rust and that they were seized) and photos taken right before they were taken off for the new hardware. Pretty crusty.

Forget the rust on the caliper, note the rust on the piston rings. Yikes.

Crustastic. What a mess.

Nothing like new hardware!

So yes, I do believe in preventive maintenance, someone mentioned (in another thread, I can't find it) that it wouldn't be a bad idea to inspect them every 6 months clean out any road "debris/gunk/etc" (between the pads and the piston) and lube the sliding pins. Of course, most of us would but the majority of owners would never.

Those unpainted Centric calipers? They’re gonna be just as crusty if you don’t touch them.

Anyone know where I can get some calipers with 14wb for the casting code? I can’t find them anywhere and I have a caliper that needs replaced pretty bad. Dealership wants to charge $400 each plus labor. Not going to do that.

Well 4th gen 13WH do not fit over the 5th gen rotors. Had to return them to Napa and order the 14WB calipers from Michigan. They should be here by this weekend. Truck is out of commission until then.

The POS Centric rebuild had THREE frozen pistons. Luckily I caught it early enough that the pads aren’t unevenly worn; however, they were dragging enough to cause steering wheel shake. I hope I did not warp the rotor....anyone have any experience? The 4th gen rotors warp like pancakes but the 5th gens are certainly more beefy.

You got a part number for the 14wb calipers???

Whatever comes up in the online Napa search for 2010 5th gen calipers

DO NOT use 2016+ as they changed the bolt size from 12-14mm.

Well that's the problem I'm running into. I have a production date of 06/2015 which is right when they changed it. So I got 2 different calipers from 2 different places and they both had the 12mm bolts and I need the 14mm bolts. But both places swore up and down they were correct until I literally took my bolt into them and showed. Then they basically gave up on me.

Over 1000 miles on the new Napa 5th gen calipers and Akebono pads after replacing seized Centric calipers and Hawk pads.

The brakes have never felt so good. Initial bite is fantastic, even when cold and pedal feel is SIGNIFICANTLY better even compared to when the Centrics were originally installed.

$1,250 just for the fronts? Jesus

And that's just for the "black" calipers and brake pads, want new brake lines add $44.29, want them in another color there's 6 different colors to choose from add $74, want rotors with that black caliper add either $78.50 for Centric rotors, or add $352 for DBA 4000 rotors.

I am not sure if I missed it in here but I need to get a metric line wrench and I don't know what size it is. I ended up getting the PowerStop I think they are red powder coated calipers and Centric Slotted rotors just for the hell of it. Wanted just black but couldn't find them and I am not going through the effort to paint them myself. Also need a one-man bleeder pump. Anyone have any lich with the one from Sears? I think it is a Lincoln or something. Only $35 for a tool I will barely use and I don't have anyone to help me so I need to do it by myself. Hopefully everything will just bolt right up as I always seem to have bad luck no matter what I do even though I know what I am doing. Also went with the Akebono pads givin the good reviews on here. Its all going on my 2003 Limited. With my back issues the rears are going to have to wait for a little while. They seem to be in good shape for now...

So, I’m needing to do brakes soon on my ‘04, and while I’d love to do the BBK, it’s just out of my range at this time, so I’ve decided 5th gen makes sense for my needs. If I go to Napa (for example), I know that I need to get the calipers for a 2010, but they ALWAYS ask “what model, engine, etc.” What are you guys that buy at a store giving for info? I’d rather not mention that I’m upgrading my ‘04 since they may hassle me on the core return if they knew. I just don’t even know what models and options were available for 5th gen to sound convincing. For example, are the calipers the same for both the Limited and SR5 on the 5th gens?

I'm getting ready to do the same thing and this is an excellent point. My plan is to go to a Toyota parts website and select through the models to find a good combo. Although I may hold onto my cores anyway since they only give you 16 bucks back.

It probably doesn't matter but just say trail edition with the v6 4wd. Should be pretty straight forward. The guy behind the counter doesn't care what you're using it for, they just need to be able to pull the part number and the part itself. I've done it asking parts for other years for my car lol.

I want to bring the issue I just had with 5th gen calipers to everybody's attention because I am concerned it is not an isolated case and may affect others.

Possibly should be merged here

summary: correct rear caliper casting # for 5th gens is F14. I was sent one F14 and one F14B which made me look things up. F14B is 93-98 Land Cruiser according to several lists I found on google. When I requested replacement I was told that they only had F14B calipers. I looked at other mfgs and it does seem like for whatever reason F14B calipers are sold as compatible replacements. The pistons on the two calipers were different even though both are listed as having 48mm bore!

I am very intersted if anybody who did this recently paid attention to what they received. If you don't pay attention the caliper will mount and work OK but might not be an upgrade at all.

Was wondering if anyone else who used the Akebono Performance Performance Ultra Premium Ceramic Pads have been having any cold brake squealing noise? I did my brake swap 11/2016 and for the last several months I have noticed that my pads do squeak when cold. I've got about 20k on since I've done the upgrade and still have TONS of pad material left when I've inspected everything when it was on a lift with the tires off. Just curious if anyone else has seen this with these Akebono pads.
