5th Gen Front Caliper Slide Pin Stuck

Hi,

I attempted to perform some basic maintenance on my brakes yesterday (2012, SR5) and discovered I couldn't get one of the front caliper slide pins out. The other 3 came out, albeit with varying degrees of persuasion, but I couldn't get the 4th to budge. It seems to be stuck from corrosion as the other 3 were all heavily corroded as well. I tried spraying some PB Blaster where the pin threads through the hole in the caliper, followed by some blows from a hammer to no avail.

Any suggestions on how to get this thing out? Keep in mind I am an amateur so any/all advice is welcome.

Thanks,

Jake

If there is an opening where you can see the end of the pin, you can use a punch to tap it out. If not, just be persistent with some pliers to pull it out. Before you re-assemble, apply some Sil-Glyde to the pins.

Roger, thanks.

I can get at it with a punch - was trying yesterday but no luck. That's how I got the other ones free. Perhaps I'll try again this afternoon after the PB Blaster sat on it over night.

In case anyone cares, I finally got it out this afternoon. It took a combination of a hammer, a punch, some gumption, and the PB Blaster doing what it's supposed to do overnight. I know this is pretty petty stuff, but maybe it'll help someone like myself in a similar situation.

good you caught it early.... how did it look after you applied some paste? did you have to change out the pin?

I hit all the pins with a wire brush to knock off as much corrosion as possible and then a generous amount of calliper lube. The pin in question wasn't too bad after that. I got it to the point where I could basically slide it in and out with my hand so I didn't bother replacing it. I'll probably replace all the pins next time I have the wheels off in the spring.

If its that much that you had to clean it, in the future probably a better idea to replace them, but that is just me. I take no chance with brakes.

Thanks.
