Interesting. I didn't know MT-85 GL-4 was available. Please post if you notice a difference.

I'll defiantly report back with how I like it. Just for information, Redline has 4 GL-4 fluids.

Dave couldn't recommend a fluid outside of manufactures recommendation but he stated the additive package is consistent throughout the GL-4 lineup. Only difference is the viscosity.

.......... I'll probably do oil changes at 7500 miles vs the 10k. I've used redline for my harleys and never had issues.

He also recommends doing the first oil change at 1k miles as does Mercedes on new vehicles.
Frankly, I do the first oil and filter at under 100 miles and have yet to have an engine burn any oil. My Ford 5.4 P/U with over 300k miles burns no measurable amount at 5k mile change intervals.
After all it is a PITA to add oil between changes.:usa:

The TC seems to like the thicker fluid when I'm in 4 wheel drive; been out west to Utah and norther Arizona a few times and the factory fill was to thin for me personally. I ran Amsoil 75w90 in my TC for 22k miles and it ran smooth as butter, however, I learned that the GL-5 gear oils eat away at the brass synchronizers in the TC so I started shopping for a GL-4 fluid and settled on Redline.

My philosophy is if something lasts 200k miles with OEM lubricant changes, I’ll keep using OEM. But since you already tested this one out, i believe I can make an exception [emoji23]

Toyota doesn't make oil. Dealer oil changes are nothing but a waste of money. Those bulk tanks are filled with the absolute cheapest bulk oil they can get. Don't waste your $ at the dealer on anything, ever.

Hard to deny superiority of Toyota synthetic 0W20 of it's molybdenium content. And this is major contributor to longevity of Toyota engines, notably during break in period.

The problem is sadly that not all Toyota dealers use this oil when you go in for a oil change. Some just use the cheapest oil they can find.

Brass/Copper synchronizers in our transfer cases? Video is of a transfer case out of a 2017 Taco, complete disassembly; halfway through the video you will see the brass/copper synchronizers. Looked up replacement fluids and reached out to Redline and Amsoil, Redline has a GL-4 75W replacement fluid but Amsoil has no substitute. Redline web site states the GL-4 lacks the Sulphur that damages the brass/copper components that the GL-5 fluids have.
The question is should we be using a GL-5 75W90 in the transfer case?

Here is the UOA of my transfer case running Amsoil 75w90 GL-5, according to Blackstone it looks good.
One thing to consider is Blackstone doesn't test for Brass; Brass is an Alloy (Man Made Metal) comprised of Copper and Zinc. Zinc being a EP additive added to engine oils it would be hard to make a determination of synchronizer damage. However, Copper is low/average according to Blackstone so that is a good sign.
In all fairness this was a short run of 22k miles, not sure what long term usage of a GL-5 fluid in the TC would look like.

I've run 10w30 a few times now but I live in florida, I would Not run a 10w30 in a cold climate. Last winter we had frost 2 times in my part of florida and the 10w30 made the engine harder to turn over. It actually made the timing chains make a strange noise like they slapped the timing cover slightly. Whatever it was I will not run 10w30 in colder climates, even down here in florida.

5W-30 would be a better choice according to this page from an FJ Cruiser owner's manual for the UAE-EURO market.
