5th gen TPMS disable

TIS techstream

If you buy the TIS Techstream from Amazon ($100) then you can program your own TPMS sensors and not have to worry about the light, you can even adjust the psi that turns on the light, set it to 5psi and never have the light go on again!

Which model techstream advertized on amazon will allow me to change the tire pressure in the TPMS on my 4 runner?
 
Disable TPMS 2017 4 runner

Since this is my first post here I couldnt start a new thread, however, I do believe I have the bypass solution for 5th gens. I have a 2018, I bought access to toyotas technical information system to download the schematics. It turned out to be the same as my 2014 Tacoma. The tpms light needs to see 3.2v or higher to stay off, unlike a ground on older generations. No big deal heres what I did. Drop the drivers side dash panel below the column. Look to the left of the column and there should be a gray box with one bolt holding it to the subdash. Unplug the wiring and locate pin 5&6, dark green and light green next to each other. The dark greeb is the light output, and the light green is 5vdc supply to the antenna module. Jumper those two wires together and plug it back into the module. The test is when you turn your ignition on you should no longer see the tpms light. I havnt driven yet but so far this looks like the solution many including myself has been after.

I am not an electrician BUT you state "tpms light needs to see 3.2v or higher to stay off, unlike a ground on older generations" I do not understand how a bulb needs 3.2v to stay OFF.

I so want to disable this system, but need to understand your logic. Please be kind enough to reply
 
I use the old school TMPS. That was call LATAC (Look At Tire And Check) - "Hmm. Looks a bit low, I should check that."

When did mankind become so dependent on technology that it was mandated by the feds that I can't determine when my tires are off. It's not like it won't drive funny if it's low.
 
Just wanted to say thanks to zeindog. I installed this solution this morning on my 2018 SR5.

I had ICON Rebounds installed a couple days ago and the tire shop couldn’t install the oem TPM sensors without scratching the wheels (they claim).

So happy to find this workaround.
 
2020 is much more user friendly.

I took the plunge and followed the instructions, knowing that if it did not work, I could just undo the connection. It worked ! and I must thank you for the posting. I still do not know however, why or how a bulb needs 3.2V to stay OFF. If anyone can help educate me, please help.

thanks for this fix, just bought a 4runner and one TPMS must be bad, have manually checked all the tires. Light still on.

I believe run flat tires required TPMS cause they could pass the eye test but be flat.

Run flats were originally for sports cars with out the space for a spare tire, like a Corvette. Then the became mainstream when the manufactures figured out they can delete the spare to "add cargo space" and pass along the cost of a $8 flat to a $300 tire. Oh wait that specific tires is out of stock, on back order or no longer available. Lets replace all 4 for $1500.

They don't belong on everyday cars for regular people.

Hi, I would like to purchase a tool to do this and not bypass the sensor...but I understand there are multiple parts! Turn on the sensor, read the sensor, and then save it in the ECU (or somewhere).

Since my local Toyota will charge me $300 if the sensors have to be reprogrammed, I want to just purchase the tool and go anywhere to swap the tires.

I have a 2014 4Runner.

Preferably I get a tool doesn't need a PC...but what is best for 1 tool to do it all? What does everyone think about this all-in-one?

Here's a Scangauge2 programmed for 4Runner tire pressures.
It also has a fifth reading for your spare tire if you equip it with TPMS.

Even on the 2020 and 21's you still need to read the TPMS tag info and load them into the ECU if you didn't swap your factory ones. Once the tag info is in, you can swap between summer and winter wheels if you wanted and it will automatically find them.

It will not automatically find a new sensor if it wasn't loaded into the ECU. I'm using an ATEQ scanner to do it and it works fine. Then you can handle everything through the dash.

You stated that on older generation toyota's, it was necessary to ground out the TPSM warning light to by pass the system. Do you know if this applies to 2008 corolla? On 6hat I could join the black/white ground to the pink light wire. Comments.
 
i prefer using my tpms sensor. you don't have to check your tires for pressure often. i do though before a road trip. in my 2020 4runner, you will be able to tell which tires have a low pressure. during a tire rotation, you will have to reprogram it also to identify where the tires are located.

i can understand it on my 2005, i noticed that the tpms sensor battery is getting low but still works though. i may completely remove the tpms sensor if one fails since i don't want to spend anymore money towards it. just a backup car for the family and for local driving. i bought the tpms tool though because the tireshop i brought it to could not figure out why my tpms light is on. i fixed it myself by registering 1 new tpms sensor thru the obd2 port. i could not blame them if they can't spend too much time figuring it out. they are probably paid based on what service is done. if i were you, get a tpms tool that can be used to program your tpms.
 
Need a little help. On the tpms disable i used a posi-tap and when it tapped it actually cut the wire in half too close to the harness connector to repair. There is enough left to attempt to pull the wire out of the connector. Does anyone know the proper procedure to release the wire from the harness and pull it out so I could try to put a new wire in the light green pin and then reconnect to the other end of the wire? For now my tpms light blinks for 60 seconds then steady which means a system malfunction.
