5th gen trail components work in a 4th gen?

Wondering, since 2008 and 09 trails are as scarce as frog teeth, if the locking diff system, rear end and electronics will work on an older model. Easier to find a wrecked 5th gen than one of those.

5th Gens have the 8.2" updated rear end, so the gears and locker won't swap unless you swap the entire rear end with axle housing.

There are plenty of other options for locking your 8" rear diff, 07-09 FJ Cruisers have the 8" diff with elocker, certain 3rd gen 4Runners have the elocker in their 8" diff as well, as well as some Tacomas. You will only need the 3rd member and a wiring harness adapter ($200) and it's pretty much plug and play.

You can always throw in an ARB air locker ($900) but you would also need an onboard air compressor and plumb the air lines.

May be easier to just swap the whole rear end. Key is finding one and getting the right thing. Would stick with the FJ if they all have locker. Is the wiring kit the same for all vehicles? Is it Toyo or aftermarket?

One more thing on the FJs, is there an on board compressor and wiring harness / switch for them that I'd have to pull? I want to turn my limited into a "trail" with extras. I'll have to search for writeups. Thanks in advance.

Most of the FJ's have a locker, you would just need to double check the gearing is the same as your 3.73 gear ratio (most FJ's and Tacomas are) Tacomas of course have the leaf springs so you can't swap the entire axle housing directly over. FJ's didn't have on board compressors, elockers don't need them.

Just swapping out the 3rd member is pretty easy, and probably a lot cheaper.

im not sure what you mean by a compressor. but an FJ cruiser would work aslong as either A) pull the 3rd member out of a 07-09 or B) pulled the entire rear end out of a 10-14 since 2010 was the change to the 8.2 for both the 4runner and fj.

i bought a 3rd gen 4runner locking 3rd member and installed it into my stock housing since it is the same diff as the 09 4th gen trail and 07-09 fjs. you also dont need to pull the entire harness for the locker either. i used the 12 volt guy harness and switch setup or you can build your own which is very easy and feeds full 12volts to the locker making the shifting much faster than the stock setup which only used 7volts to shift the locker mechanism.
