5th Gens in Afghanistan?

I jsut came back from central Asia and there were quite a few 4th gen 4runners there, where as I do not even recall seeing any a few years ago. Plenty of those Lexus gx470 or whatever they are and land cruisers.

No, have not seen any Jeep grand cherokees. The only full size US made suvs I saw were from the US embassy.

I was there a few years ago and I saw many 3rd gens but no 4 or 5 gens.

I drove a Toyota Landcruiser when I was there. There was a pretty good article in Stars and Stripes about how Afghanistan was taking vehicles that were totaled in the U.S. So you be riding done the street and see a car with a Stanford Alumni sticker, Mets Fan or my favorite one Harvard Law bumper sticker.

Come to think of it I drove a Toyota Landcruiser in Iraq as well. It was a 4wd, manual with up armored bullet proof glass. It was a nice truck.

When I was stationed in Japan the U.S. Air Force Security Forces guys drove brand new Toyota 4runners 4th gen (2004-2006 time frame)

No .50 cal on that truck. Looks like a 7.62 machine guns (M240?) on the door. Top mount has both a 7.62 machine gun and a grenade launcher.

I had one at my disposal. Reason I picked one up when I got home. Of course mine was armored and got about 4mpg and was anemic in the acceleration department but I loved it none the less.

Well, then I was right, it is 7.62. Just x54R instead of x51

If you look closely you can also see a maroon 3rd gen Hilux Surf in the background (it's a Hilux Surf, not a 4runner because it has the spare tire carrier on the outside.)

My understanding is that the US Spec Tacomas were only used until they wore out (which was not long) and then were replaced with ROW-spec Hiluxes procured from Pakistan or elsewhere (and thus, RHD.)
