5VZFE Pre and Post 02/99 Differences? 4Runner & Tacoma

After a little research, I'm under the impression that there are some differences in the 5VZFE engine manufactured before and after February of 1999. Specifically between the 3rd Gen 4Runners and the 1st Gen Tacomas

Most of what I can tell is the exhaust manifold not being the same, and something about the dipstick hole (or lack there of).

I haven't been able to find much information to verify the differences.

I know the '01-'02 4Runners were drive by wire. I don't know what all will come into play if swapping an engine into a later model 3rd gen with one of these earlier models.

Does anyone know what all the variables/differences are with all this?

also the brake boosters in the 01-02 are electronically controled and built in ABS module. make for and expensive replacement down the road. VSC Trac in standard on the 01-02 as well.

I don't think there is anything different about the engines themselves (although I may be wrong). I think the difference is in the accessories.
Manifolds, MAFs, Throttle body, brake booster, etc.

Pretty much, as long as you don't throw away your pre '99 accessories, they will bolt right on to the post '99 engine with no problem, and vise versa.

Exhaust manifold isn't really part of the engine and can easily be swapped.

The only dipstick hole issue I'm aware of is the T100 5vz-fe - it has a different dipstick hole setup, along with different oil pan, oil pickup, etc.

I don't know about that date, though. My rig was 03/99 (a late MY '99) but I have none of the differences mentioned, and I have seen no indication that 03/99+ is any different than the rest of MY '99, which goes through 06/99 production.

Exhaust manifold isn't really part of the engine and can easily be swapped.

The '00-'99 Cali and all '01-'02 exhaust manifolds are different from the Federal pre-'2000 manifolds, because the Cali/'01+ exhaust crossover pipes are different and won't bolt up to the Federal manifolds. Engine side is the same.
