6 speed manual swap?

Unicorn 4th Gen.........

Yea I read your PM cuz my phone was blowing up with messages from this post, the other forum, PMs and YouTubez. And heck, I was pretty tired after fitting up engine mounts on my LS1 swap.

Anyway, emelianenkov, the swap WAS NOT cheap! I say with every swap I've ever done or helped someone do, if you want to do this be prepared to throw BUCKETS of cash at it. That being said, the swap was relatively straight forward and this truck with the manual is so sweet. Before my buddy swapped gears it would turn 2300RPM at 80mph, and since 1st is so short it still had LOADS of torque. Then the suspension he put on it is great, Toytec I think was the brand? Lifted it enough to fit 33s on it, so it looks great and rides sooooo well. I was really impressed with how easily it all went in, even though there were no instructions from Toytec.

So what hardware did you and your friend use? Everyone here thinks its an FJ tranny. Did you guys change the ECU or the whole engine ??( BlackWorksInc indirectly said the whole engine may need to be swapped out). Did you keep the transfer case or swap that out too? Soooo many questions............ LOL.

Anyway, Awesome Job man!! More pics and videos of your rig would be appreciated!

I would guess it's expensive, but that's why I was asking for a parts list or something. I already spent $3,500 to replace my automatic 2 years ago, so I'm no stranger to expensive shit lol.

When you're not doing epic LS and 6 speed swaps, could you please make a little writeup, or even just a "we used ____ from a ____ and did ____ to ____" so I can see. I'm really glad to hear it was relatively straight forward!

I'm running Toytec suspension up front as well, and have a total lift of 4.5". I can clear 34's if I wanted to lol. Imagine the low range on 34's with the low first gear of the manual transmission?

Thanks 4thGen6MT

Ok, here you go:
Taco transmission and transfer case
Taco ECM and immobilizer ECU (kinda)
Some MAD 1337 electrical/modification haxorz skillz
Taco pedals (kinda)
FJ parking brake (kinda)
Custom drive shafts front and rear
Stock 4Runner engine/trans harness (kinda)
Time
$$$$$$
Blood, Sweat and Tears

*NOTE: kinda = see MAD 1337 electrical/modification haxorz skillz

I really like making things that should've existed from the factory exist. HAHA!

Thank you!

Well shit I wish I didn't pass over that $300 Tacoma trans and t-case....

I'll just save and buy a totaled 6 speed Tacoma to get parts and wiring from

HA!!!! Most of us do.

Thanks for sharing!

Alex: Now you know! I'm wondering if it's just easier to swap the whole damn powertrain (engine........ Taco has a 1GRFE............ ).

Sounds like a project!

I contributed to some of that "blowing up", so I apologize, but I don't think anyone can blame us, this is bad-ass. i was kinda hoping he would have said it was a simple bolt-up job, but I figured it wouldn't be. I am not too sure what he meant by 1337 electrical skills, but i am assuming a lot of stuff had to be spliced/changed. Also, the custom driveshaft would be $$$$. Why can't Toyota just give the option of a manual.......?

Because you don't need 3 pedals to drop your kids off at soccer practice

Yeah, sadly the 4Runner's target demographic at the time was the average soccer mom. 6 speed would be perfect in a 4th gen

My truck will have a manual one day. Just need to finish school and get my high paying commercial scuba diving career, so I can have the money for this project and have half a year paid leave..

The bellhousing and flywheel all bolt up to the 4Runner 1GR, swapping the engine
would actually be more difficult because you'd have to mess with fuel, P/S, coolant, etc...

One thing I would recommend if you're considering this swap is to get the wiring diagram for
BOTH vehicles and compare them line by line. Also, since the Taco T-case is used, you need
the 4WD ECU as well. We chose Taco since most of the connectors are identical, just needed
re-pinned and a couple swapped out for different connectors. Swapping the Taco harness
would've required more work to make it work with the 4Runner.

It's so perfect, more comfortable than a taco, better visibility than a FJ, and makes the 4Runner fun and engaging to drive.

You'll need one special tool...

And that would be this one:

The money cannon. Just aim at your 4runner and light the fuse. :D

Still, very cool idea. :trophy:

Of course, the ULTIMATE swap would be to not only swap a MT but also a T-case with an actual floor mounted shifter like the 3rd gens. I suppose if you used FJC running gear you might be able to pull this off.

Great info!

I'm working on getting the wiring diagrams.

I really appreciate the info man

So engine ECU and the 4wd ECU?

Can you use the 4R t-case with this? I like the AWD functionality of this t-case

Also the manual FJ case is AWD full time. That may just work!

Think about this: Since the FJ Case is full time 4wd, there is no need for an ADD. remove the ADD crap or use a front axle from a V8 4runner, and now you've eliminated yet another potential failure point, the ADD.

With no ADD to fail, no electronic T-case switch to fail, and no auto tranny to crap the bed, you'd have a pretty indestructible vehicle. ;):

Manual FJ case would be the best way if you want to retain the AWD, and in
that case you'd need a matching 4WD ECU.

The auto and manual transfer case input shafts are the exact opposite, one
being internal spline and the other external spline. You could swp the input
shafts, but getting those cases back together CORRECTLY is next to impossible
without lots of experience.

So this would swap in just fine :D without all the electronic crap

The only issue with trying to go "full manual" is going to be dealing with the Hydraboost unit and the ABS module as it relies on switch signals from the 4WD ECU to determine how to adjust sensitivity.

You could I suppose just unplug it all, let the ABS module default with DTCs and disable itself, but I'm not sure if there are hidden safeties installed in the software that would hamper performance.

Just my thoughts, but that Aisin 6-speed manual is known for having issues. Read up about them on Tacoma and FJ forums. I would rather not have that transmission.

Toyota does not even put that 6-speed manual behind 1GR's in the Hilux's that they sell overseas if that says anything.

I've driven the 5 spd that they put in the new Hilux diesels overseas, and it is supreme. Those things will last forever. I cannot speak to the 6 spd though.
