60K mi Service

Hey Guys & Girls,

Does any one of you have done the 60K mi service in a Toyota dealer? How much it was? Is it worth it?

Yesterday i took my ride to a toyota dealer here in Dublin CA, because i was thinking that i need the 5k mi service (oil chage, tires rotation, etc.), but when the customer service guy search in the national database, there was no previous service on my ride.

I bought my 4R from Enterprise last january, and it suppose that they did the services. I think they did them by their own to keep them cheap, but now am wondering if i should take the service with toyota and spend big bucks on it.

Any comments?

These are the items that require service at 60k miles from Toyota.
Toyota Parts and Service

Lubricate propeller shaft (4WD)
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Replace cabin air filter
Replace engine air filter
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Replace spark plugs 5
Rotate tires
Visually inspect brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs 6
Inspect the following:
Automatic transmission fluid
Ball joints and dust covers
Brake lines and hoses
Charcoal canister 7
Drive belts 8
Drive shaft boots (4WD)
Engine coolant 3
Engine valve clearance 9
Exhaust pipes and mountings
Front differential oil (4WD)
Fuel lines and connections, fuel tank band and fuel tank vapor vent system hoses
Fuel tank cap gasket
Radiator and condenser
Rear differential oil
Steering gear box
Steering linkage and boots
Transfer case oil (4WD)



Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions:


Driving While Towing
Replace automatic transmission fluid
Replace front differential oil (4WD)
Replace rear differential oil
Replace transfer case oil (4WD)
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis
Driving on Dirt Roads or Dusty Roads
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis

Applicable Footnotes:
1) Reset the oil replacement reminder light ("MAINT REQD") or the message "OIL MAINTENANCE REQUIRED" on the multi-information display after engine oil replacement.

3) Refer to "Engine Coolant" in the "Explanation of Maintenance Items" section in the back of this guide for more information.

5) 1GR-FE engine. Maintenance services of spark plugs are required under the terms of the Emissions Control Warranty.

6) Inspect thickness measurement and disc runout.

7) 2UZ-FE engine. For vehicles registered in California, Massachusetts and New York States only.

8) Initial inspection at 60,000 miles/72 months. Inspect every 15,000 miles/18 months thereafter.

9) Check for tappet noise and engine vibration and adjust if necessary, 2AZ-FE engine only.

Most of the items you can DIY or have an independent mechanic do it for less. Take a look at what the dealer's offering to do, they may be doing extra work possibly charging you more and/or leaving off work Toyota recommends.
 
I always ask for the factory maintenance, not the dealer. The dealer is always padded with extras to inflate the price. Call around a few dealers and ask them to quote you the Toyota scheduled maintenance.
 
I got a quote from Daly City Toyota for a 60K mile service on my '04 V6 4wd and the base rate was about $600. As other have said, however, that includes silly things like "replace cabin air filter" and "replace engine air filter", which I'm sure they charge way too much for.

The reason it's so much is that they said they'd do a full fluid change -- tranny, transfer, diffs, etc. -- plus (for V6) new plugs in addition to the usual greasing and torquing.

Still seems a bit much to me, but if you're suspicious about what has (or has not) been done in the past then IMO it's probably good to have all the major fluids changed anyway. For all you know you're still running the same diff oil as when it left the factory.
 
Never, ever ask a dealer for "the x,000 mile service". If you do, they will almost certainly add things you don't need to puff up the price. Always use the maintenance guide (like the material Uneek posted above) to get an itemized quote for the exact services you need.
 
The dealer said I neede tranny and diff oil replaced, but the manual says to replace only in special operating conditions. What are those special conditions? I don't tow, I use 4wd rarely and only lock up the transfer case a handful of times a year. I would have thought that means I probably would not have to change the fluids.

I think Toyota considers special operating conditions are towing, vehicle is used as a taxi, operated on dirt or dusty roads. Following the special operating conditions would be giving the 4Runner a bit of extra love.

I really don't know if my 4R needed or not. I just took it and made it. Base on the fact that my 4R use to be a rental car, so i dont know if it was care properly during that time. I paid $900 for Oil change and filter, gasket, plug sparks, battery service, washer solvent, tbi cleaner, inj cleaner, dot3, premium oil treatment, synthetic oil, gear oil, i ask for the TRD air filter, and a bunch of things that i have no idea if they did or not.

I just want to be sure that nothing happens to my ride. And they showed me like the history of my 4R in the "national database" and there was nothing on it. It suppose that the next service is just oil change, rotate tires, and clean the air filter.

I think you got ripped off but that's stealership in CA tho. You might as well take it to my chop shop garage and i get it done for the following prices:
Oil Change comes with filter and gasket = $30,
Spark plugs= $30 ($5 ea x 6),
Battery service which is distilled water= 1 dollar
Washer Solvent = $2 from Wally,
Injector Cleaner (STP)= $3.00,
Dot3 (Prestone)= $3.00,
TRD Air Filter= $55.00,
Premium Oil Treatment (BG 44k)= $12.00,
Transfer case oil change= $130,
Transmission fluid change= $80,
Brake Fluid flush and adjust= $125,
Hazardous Disposal = 4 dollars

TOTAL: $475
