6112 perch setting trade-offs

I'm getting ready to install the 6112/5160 set up w/ dobinsons 1.5" lift rear coils on my limited and I'm trying to determine whether i should set the 6112s to 2" or 2.5" of lift.

I've read a lot of conflicting posts on whether or not the higher lift settings negatively affect ride quality, so for those of you have installed 6112s, what's the story here? Will there be that big of a difference between the 2" and 2.5" perch settings?

I was hoping that the 6112/5160 would be an improvement over the harsh XREAS ride I have currently (w/ ridge grapplers; wasnt great stock either), but given the preload on the 6112's 600lb spring for the 2.5" setting I'm beginning to wonder if that will be the case.

Thoughts?

I would like to know about this as well. I went with the T13's from Wheelers but will have the 6112's up front. I am debating between these two "perch" settings as well.

I recently upped my spring preload on my 6112's, and I have about 1000 miles on it now. I went from about ~1.75" to the 2.5" setting.

My initial impressions at my original settings were that it soaked up the bigger bumps WONDERFULLY. Break dive was almost non-existent (though I wasn't bothered by it when stock either), the ride was smooth and it handled small bumps well too.

After upping the preload and adding new UCAs, I actually like the ride better, even though it is a bit stiffer on the smaller bumps (still not uncomfortable) and still plenty plush on the bigger stuff. I think I like it better now due to the fact that I have more normal rake (Wheelers T12's in the rear gave about 2.5" of lift unloaded). And the UCAs have made the handling (straight line) much better! It tracks perfectly straight now with minimal input, where as before it did tend to wander.

I don't think you'll be disappointed at the 2.5" setting on the 6112's. Where you'll notice a difference is mostly in the rear. I'm not familiar with Dobinson's springs, but if you increase the spring rate in the back, you will have a harsher ride if you do not increase the amount of weight that you're carrying day to day. Mine trailers great now, and it's a perfect when I have the back loaded up for biking or camping (which is often), but unloaded it can be a bit stiff. I also expected that when I made my purchase, and I'm not disappointed in my decision.

Edit: If you can, do the lift yourself. It'll save you money, and if you don't like the set up at 2.5, you could easily lower it back down to 2" without taking a financial hit. You just may lose a few hours over the weekend. (highly recommend a lifetime alignment).

I have a 2017 with KDSS and just installed 6112 and 5100 with Eibach prolift 1" springs in the back this past weekend. I have the fronts set on the 5th setting and according to the updated instructions from Bilstein that should be 2.4 inches for KDSS equipped 4runners. I got about 2.25 inch and it rides great, feels less jarring going over crappy roads and potholes than stock.

Circlip Questions - Along the lines of what you guys are talking about

I own a 2011 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4x4 w/ X-REAS and I do NOT have KDSS. Stock rims and tire sizes at P245/60R20. As of right now, I have oil leaking out of all 4 stock shocks/struts and because of it having the X-REAS system, the dealer wants roughly $4,000 to replace all 4. That's not happening. What I'd like to do is just remove the X-REAS system and replace with aftermarket shocks/struts/springs. I know it can be done and I'm looking at purchasing everything I need and either doing the install myself or taking it somewhere to do. Either way, I'd like to purchase all the parts together from one spot.

I have been on this forum reading TONS of forum posts on this topic and I believe I have it narrowed down. I want to give my rig a slight increase and height while keeping this down to a lower cost overall compared to replacing everything stock. I'm not looking to lift more than about 1.5", am going to be keeping stock rims/tires for now (but would like a more wider look to bring out tires to wheel well at a later time) and overall, I'm after a more level "look" and stance of the 4Runner. This is a daily commuter on road and will never be used off-road except for a yearly trip riding on the beach at OBX.

All of that said, I have it narrowed down to the following:

1. Bilstein 6112's up Front
2. Bilstein 5160's in Rear
3. Wheeler's T13 Rear Springs (1.5")
4. Billet Reservoir Clamps for Bilstein 5160's (x2)

My question for you guys before I order is around the 6112 circlip settings and my overall lift height max that I'm after of about 1.5" with a leveled look overall. If I'm getting the 1.5" springs in rear, what circlip settings should I set for both Driver and Passenger side of the Bilstein 6112's? From looking at the install diagram of the 6112's, it looks like I would need a Drivers side circlip set at #4 and Passenger side circlip at #3 for a lift of 1.5" up front. That combined with the 1.5" spring in rear would give me 1.5" overall, correct? Would that give me a leveled look as well?

Thanks for the assistance all!

I have my 6112s and 5160s ready to be put on. I’m thinking about doing either the 0.8” up front only with no change to the rear or I’m mostly likely leaning towards setting 6112s at 1.6” and putting Dobinsons 1” springs in rear.
Some stuff i read says that as soon as you hit the road with any weight some of the rake goes away so that’s why I’m probably not gonna do the 2” setting. Also I don’t wanna have to drop money on new UCAs.

Sounds like a few of us are in the same boat. I’m leaning towards the 2.5” perch in the front at this pint. For those of you considering a new coil in the rear, note that you may get a bit more lift than what is advertised depending how much weight is over the rear of your vehicle. I don’t have a third row and my rake is already 1.4” stock, so I’m erring on the side of caution by going with at least the 2” front setting

I’m gonna use a jack and lift my front 0.8” and see what I think. If I wanna go higher in the front I’m gonna just install some Dobinsons 1” springs in the rear and have em settle after 500 miles then decide on front lift height of 1.6 or 2”.

DONT FORGET THE REAR HEIGHT CHANGES WITH THE AMOUNT OF GAS ONBOARD. WHEN YOU DO BEFORE AND AFTER MAKE SURE GAS TANK IS CLOSE TO THE SAME AMOUNT

I am in a similar situation. I am fine with the rake, but I have a 2008 v8 limited with XREAS and about 94000 miles. The XREAS needs replacement, so I have chosen the 6112/5160 combination. I would like to lift the entire truck 1.5”, so I’m still unsure as to what front and rear springs would be the best. Why are some of you choosing Dobinson’s on the rear instead of the Bilstein’s? I thought they might be a better match.

I have a '19 SR5 and just had a shop put on this set up with bilstein springs. I asked them to set it as close to 2.5 as possible. It rides awesome. I'm glad I had 17,000 on the stock suspension to notice what a big difference it makes. SO much smoother, more planted/confidence inspiring. Soaks up bad streets much better. I'll take it off road this weekend to see how it is there, but I'm sure it will be great.
