6th gen 3.5L 4runner in 2022/ 2023?

What 5th generation owners say: I want a bigger NA engine with more hp and low end torque.

What Toyota hears: small displacement turbo that makes most of its power above 6000rpm and has start/stop feature.

What 5th generation owners say: I want a highway gear on the bomb-proof transmission.

What Toyota hears: 10 speed gear hunting transmission that shatters when off-roading.

What 5th generation owners say: I want a mod-friendly frame that lets me install bigger tires and long travel suspension.

What Toyota hears: can we design the body, frame, and suspension in any way that makes mods even harder to do than it already is? We want it to be impossible to mount any tire without rubbing and any suspension lift over 1" that won't **** up the UCAs.

What 5th generation owners say: some safety aides like auto stop, lane departure, and adaptive cruise are nice to have.

What Toyota hears: make it so you can't turn these systems off. Ever. So a rock on a trail will activate the panic stop and leave you stranded since the collision avoidance won't let you hump a boulder.

What 5th generation owners say: more factory lockers.

What Toyota hears: drivetrain more open than Will Smith's marriage.

Hahahahahahah! I can't even breathe! Tried to read this to my wife and I couldn't even do it. Good shit. LOL.

With a turbo charged engine it’s not hard to get a lot of torque at low rpms and they don’t need high rpm to make high hp if they were designed for a truck application

An engine similar to this would be great for the 6th Gen 4Runner imho
Honda Accord 2.0T 265 hp and 300 ft lbs

See the dino charts in the first link.

This is definitive proof that Honda underrated the new Accord 2.0T from the factory - Alt Car news

the 4runner needs more than that if you drive at altitude.

265/300 with a turbo would be a big upgrade at altitude over the 4.0. A 2.5L Turbo could easily get us ~320/320 at low RPM while using 87 Octane.

I'm holding out hope that we'd get the 3.5L TT, but I'm guessing that'll be a GX exclusive because 4R owners apparently don't need or want power.

I love the 5th gen... when i heard about the possible 3.5 L or even a hybrid engine, I went and got another 5th gen

Purchased my first 2020 on march 31st

purchased my second 2020 on May 10th.!!

Don't mean to sound like a snob or a troll...
But i love them!

Are you Hoarding 4Runners? It's like not toilet paper :)

Wouldn't they constantly be in really low gears with the engine screaming?
It's bad enough with the 4.0 having to stick it in 3rd for half the drive to the tunnel.

Not in my experience. Modern DIT engines make most of their power down low and with a proper transmission you're hardly ever at high RPM unless you're really flooring it.

Edit - Also, having a turbo helps negate a lot of the altitude induced power loss.
