When I bought my new 1984 4Runner the dealer told me they were not going to produce any in 1986...

Yeah might be a sales ploy??
But the same guy told me that they were stopping the FJ's a few years before Toyota actually stopped making them?
(I figured it was just a bunch of hype? But they actually stopped making the FJ)

Here in Hawaii the 4runner is the most popular Police vehicle! So it's hard to imagine Toyota will stop making these anytime soon.

I heard similar things about 2018 being planned as the last year. I've heard that the plan to stop making the 4Runner was scrapped due to strong sales. I wouldn't be surprised to see another refresh, though, rather than a 6th generation for the short term.

To clarify, they haven't stopped making FJ's, they just aren't being marketed in the US anymore. For example you can buy one in South Africa.

Much like you can still get coveted 70 series Land Cruisers... except in the US.

Not sure what you mean "relationship"??? 4R & FJ are body on frame IFS, (Almost identical set up) and the LC is a body on frame with solid axles????

Anyhow? Has nothing to do with what the guy at Toyota said. I was just wondering if anyone else heard anything? Or if it was just another bogus rumor to spur interest?

Either way? I already have 2 runners!

Ah? I stand corrected! I wasn't even aware that they still made the LC? Here on a Rock in the middle of the Pacific they haven't been available for years from our Toyota dealers.

The only LC I see here are the solid axles.

My guess is a facelift and new interior but same basic design for 2018. They can do that for next to nothing, not even need to do much testing. Ride that for a few years and see what their competition does so they know how big they have to go to compete.
I can't see Toyota letting it go if Chevy and Ford end up with bof suvs.

Not only that but you are clueless. The chicken tax only applies to light trucks, not SUVs. This is why the Tacoma and Tundra are built in the USA. Light trucks built in Mexico are not subject to the tax due to NAFTA. The tax was imposed in 1963 under LBJ and includes brandy and potato starch. There is your fake news lesson for today. LOL

The 4runner would have been gone or made here in the USA if there was a 25% tariff on it.

Short on time answer = look up Toyota LC120 series which is one of the most popular truck / SUV platforms in the world. Seriously don’t see them going bye-bye. While I have no clue what they will do in the USA the 4R is setting sales records, especially with the demise of the FJ (also of the same platform).

no, my insider sources are still confirming paint options such as black, sliver, and white for the 6th gen. They're all really solid sources, and really have their finger on the pulse of things.

Also......I can now confirm....gas powered. It was in the air for awhile but my sources have confirmed it will indeed be powered by gas. The hydrogen option is now completely off the table. We all dodged a bullet there.

There was that guy who claimed he figured out how to import the 70 series legally a month or two ago, and claimed he was bringing many more....I think 1 or 2 were on ebay, but I haven't heard much more about that since.

Pretty much everybody on this forum would love a 70 series...but we don't get it (sigh)....(or maybe Toyota doesn't get it).

(p.s. yes I know about the chicken tax, and sales/volume issues, and the cost to get things up to spec with U.S. regulations, and cannibalizing sales of other models, etc.; we all don't need to steer the thread in that direction since its been discussed many times....sometimes its just nice to dream about a 70 series)

I think I read somewhere that the FJ platform was made on the same production line as the 4R but the sheet metal body was sub contracted out by Toyota and then mated together.

vehicles over 25 years old are legal to import, you can legally import an old one and restore it. if you try to import a newer one and lie and say its 25 years old, be ready to have it seized and crushed like so many land rover defender and mini cooper. if your pockets are deep enough you can have a legally kinda-like-new 70 series

Stand corrected. I hadn't seen that. Being built in Japan, I knew that had continued production after they stopped sales here, AFAIK South Africa and Aus are huge FJ markets.
