6th Gen 4Runner Predictions!

Not sure if this has been posted already, but I just found this:

This is the first "official" acknowledgment that a new 6th gen BOF 4Runner design is in the works that I am aware of. Has this been discussed somewhere?

Exactly! I feel like people who jump into GM products because of heavy incentives don't really give a shit about quality. They're just being cheap and want the feeling of getting 'more vehicle' for less. No way in hell I'd be driving any of their heavily incentivized products. My brother has always owned GM products and they've been turds after a few years. Sure, nice when new but age like shit...and we all know how well shit ages.

I have seen a few Toyota Fortuners during my recent trip to India, if the next gen 4runner is anything like it then I am game. They look really good in person! Rear window does not fold, hopefully whatever we get in the US will be more Home Depot friendly.

If it's an American market Toyota, no real difference for me.

The Sequoia and Tundra are old as hell and suck balls. Toyota continues to miss the mark on what they think they need to compete with domestic big SUVs and pickups, doesn't help that they've been selling the same facelifted trucks for over a decade now with only marginal improvements in overall QC.

Anyway

1. 4Runner is now the next Prado, GX is gone from Lexus and blended with Toyota lineup
2. Some kind of variant of the new v6 with hopefully at least 275 hp, probably will see selectable 4x4 and full time 4x4 variants, despite that our Prado is a full time 4x4 and has been since it's been introduced
3. IFS, solid rear axle, some combination of the KDSS, X-REAS systems depending on trim
4. Base, off road, Bro, and luxury models with hopefully most of the stuff like HDC, locking diffs included in all models. I don't think we will have to wait for a Bro model, Toyota never ceases to be surprised by how much iron they can move with the TRD sticker and a mild lift
5. 35-60k

Also, the Fortuner is essentially a Hilux with a body shell thrown on it and feels as clunky as Toyota's third world pickups. It'd be suicide if they decided it replaces the much more solid and better built 4Runner, it's a competitor to the now dead Xterra at best.

Given Toyota's styling direction, it'll probably look like a Gundam humped a blobfish and then the greasy afterbirth spilled all over Akihabara and no one here will fall in love with it.

What is Toyota's challenge here is that the 4Runner is lagging at least a decade and a half behind the competition. The 5th gen is a reworked 4th gen, not a totally new model and is still running off the 4th gen and FJC engine family.

Interior design is horribly dated, interior quality is durable, but not in the least bit sexy compared to the competition.

The 5-speed is a brick shithouse of a transmission, but at the same time results in dismal fuel mileage numbers when similar vehicles are breaking mid to upper 20s.

If they decide to go with the BOF route, it'll be a trade off to see what they decide to keep primitive and what to upgrade. The 4Runner has become a legacy vehicle like the Wrangler that actually benefits from NOT changing too much, but unlike the Wrangler it still competes with much newer and fancier crossovers.

The other issue is Toyota's new corporate styling. It's garish. The GX460 looks terrible. The 4Runner has been relatively spared, but even the 5.5's don't fit together great with the modern, angular front end grafted on the same 5.0 body. Hopefully they won't try to style it after the Tacoma, which looks like a hot mess with it's huge underbite bumper.

If everyone here is right and it's a Prado, then it'll have the characteristic wedge-shaped Prado styling that's been an evolution of the two GX models we've had in the US. The question is what kind of grille Toyota will throw on it to distinguish it from its Lexus and international roots?

The final problem is engines. Toyota keeps making smaller V6s and seems allergic to big V8s. The Prado is fatter than the 4Runner and if they use the Tacoma V6 it'll be a slug, hell the current 4Runner 4.0 can't move it and it's using a V8. I can't see Toyota throwing a multi gear unit into an off roader and 6 speeds is probably all we'll see, maybe a 7 speed with a highway gear if they can squeeze power out of whatever engine they plan on using.

Just remember that they can make it 95% Paso and look nothing like the Prado. Sheet metal is cheap.

So far the only differences between the American and international versions of the GX are the front end.

Flares and roof lights would suggest that this is a proper BOF 4x4, but given the ridiculous concepts Toyota has been rolling out lately, this could be some kind of awful crossover.

Take this crumb for what it's worth, but when I told a Toyota corporate staffer last week that I was sad for selling my 4R but was waiting for the sixth gen, the reply was "you won't have to wait long!"

Is it true that Toyota will stop building the 4Runner!? I am a huge 4Runner fan and between me and my brother, we own six! I was thinking about heading to Colorado and showing you guys my favorites. Anyway I head the rumor from more than one source that the sales are tanking and they are seriously considering cancelling it like they stupidly did with the FJ Cruiser.

Thanks for the email!

I haven’t heard a single peep out of Toyota regarding the 4Runner. There have been no official statements one way or the other. Usually, something this big would be regurgitated throughout the internet.

A few folks are saying things on boards, but there’s no validity to anything they speculate.

Here’s what I do know. In 2017 thus far, Toyota is selling more 4Runners than they did during the same months in 2016. They are easily selling around 10,000 every month. That ain’t too shabby.

Why kill something that’s selling so well? I think, at the very least, the Toyota 4Runner may be updated soon. It’s possible that they may change the running-gear to make it more efficient or perform better. It’s such a damn good performer, maybe they will update some internal goodies as well.

The TFL team will be in California for the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show and we’ll have a chance to talk to the Toyota folks in person. Maybe we can glean more information about the 4Runner then.

Made me smile. Reminds me of my wife's family, who all operate on what they call "Mexican time". Aka, pretty-much get there whenever you get around to it. Took me a few years to get used to it.

"Long" in "Toyota-time" model-life is 15 years. So he could have easily meant 2 years. Just sayin'.

I remember seeing this guy post on the DFW 4Runner or the local 4runner group, ( which he works at the Toyota Headquarters in Plano, TX ) saying that they had a meeting a few weeks ago about upcoming vehicles and that the 6th gen will be a 2019 model and comes with optional hybrid. He also stated that the corporate wasn't so wow about the upcoming Tundra but more excited about the 4runner.

Take it for what its worth, but my brother is a sales manager at Toyota and his best friend is also a sales manager at a different Toyota dealership. I asked them both independently when we will see a new model of 4Runner and they said definitely not in 2019.
