6th Gen 4Runner Predictions!

There is only one fact concerning the burning 6th Gen question: Those who truly know the answer, ain't talking.

If Toyota wanted this information out (and they don't) there would be far more reliable sources than dealer salespeople.

I'm still putting my money on a 2-door option being made available alongside the fullsize to compete with Jeep and makeup for ground lost in the wake of the fj cruiser.. they make 2-door (aka 3-door) Prado's so there's no reason not to.

Where are you reading that it's not? Seems like all speculation to me. You are probably right but no where in that article does it definitively say it's a compact crossover. It suggest that maybe it's a reiteration of the FT-4X but nothing more.

You're right, it is speculation. I guess I should've said that Motor Trend is speculating that the released photo is of a new compact crossover. From the article:

"Few other details were given, but we can speculate this could be an evolution of the FT-4X concept that debuted earlier this year in New York. That concept previewed a small, outdoor lifestyle-focused crossover"

And further on:
"The U.S. market’s appetite for crossovers means there’s certainly room for another compact CUV in Toyota’s lineup."

Take this crumb for what it's worth, but when I told a Toyota corporate staffer last week that I was sad for selling my 4R but was waiting for the sixth gen, the reply was "you won't have to wait long!"

Could be hyperbole, could be something, who knows.....

Not sure. With how much the 4Runner plan has changed in the past couple years, I can't see a full redesign being ready at this point. I can see a refresh on the 5th gen like the LC Prado got this past year to hold it over until the full TNGA-F redesign in MY21/22. Now, what the refresh will entail? Who the heck knows. We've seen everything on a refresh from the 2018 Sienna that you'd be hard pressed to tell from the 2017 and the 2015 Camry that was a full reskin and nearly full interior change from the 2014 Camry. There are a lot of new powertrains out there that could be put in it as a pull ahead from the full TNGA-F redesign to spread out change points to ensure that reliability stays good.

Sometimes they work quicker than expected, though. The RX350L is being shown in LA next week and will apparently be on sale as a 2018 model. That was completely unexpected.

Interesting...

Toyota doesn't have something that directly competes with a Jeep GC - and this is probably a stab at that market. The highlander is pretty close functionally, but it lacks the pretense of going offroad. I don't think it means the 4runner is dead. Just that they want a crossover to cover 95% of the complaints I see on this board about the 5th gen. It doesn't drive like a car. It doesn't get good enough mileage. My pants get wet on the sliders. I can't figure out all the offroad buttons and what they do.

To me it looks like a Jeep GC and a Subaru mixed together. From the A-pillar back is very similar to a GC. The hood/grille is very subaru with a bit of Tacoma. It also doesn't look far from production as it's on off the shelf street tires and the body lines look like they could be close to a real vehicle. Lots of little details point that way - like how the rear door windows are split with a track so the rear window can actually roll down. That looks like a production door assembly with a handle shaved moreso than a concept door from scratch.

Since Toyota owns a big share of Subaru I'd hope they steal some tech and put a better AWD system in it. Or even better take the Lexus RWD bias awd system and put that in it. It's the best there is in any vehicle for a RWD bias awd system and they basically just sit on it. It must be really expensive to manufacture. Either way they'll sell a ton of em.

From Car and Driver: Toyota envisions the FT-AC as a gasoline-powered SUV (although a hybrid also is suggested) with all-wheel drive, including four-wheel lock functionality as well as torque vectoring.

And if we're lucky that would also push the 4runner successor further toward the wrangler market.

The FT-AC is a concept that is previewing the Rav4 that is due out next fall/winter. It definitely isn’t midsized like the JGC or 4Runner. I see it as a Cherokee Trailhawk competitor, instead, so it would slot under the 4Runner. With the recent adventure trim that debuted this year on the RAV4, this appears to be the continuation and expansion of that.

Like all concept's - some options will make it into newer models, but most options won't. I don't think we are ready for something so outlandish looking as daily drivers.

Some reviews said it was half way between the Rav 4 and highilander. I'd guess if that were the case it would be very similar size wise with the GC. Probably about like an RX350 - they are wider, longer, and about the same height as a GC. If it shares a 106" wheelbase with the Rav - it's more in Cherokee territory.

I know FCA has dumped a ton into the new Compass which looks much like a scaled down Grand Cherokee. I believe they're producing it on 4 different continents with something like 6 different engine options. I recall an Indian ad campaign touting how advanced the production technology is for it. They're trying to take over the world with it. If this new Toyota is on the RAV4 wheelbase it could also be going after that as well.

Edit: I remember now, they're offering it stateside with a 6 speed manual. Still slow with the motor we get but could be a fun little vehicle, EPA is 26 average.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Looks to be a Feisty 4Runner Competitor

My wife and I are cross shopping a 4Runner and a Wrangler and have basically settled into waiting for a redesign of one or both of them before buying. The photos out this week of the new 2018 Wrangler look promising.

I wish Toyota would make the leap and refresh or redesign the aging 4Runner already.

Same boat here. I prefer the 4Runner style and trust Toyota build quality more than Chrysler but some of the 4Runner's features are really outdated.
