In the end it's still Jeep junk that'll constantly break and leave you stranded ALL THE DAMN TIME. Stick to something that's reliable unless you are thinking of real heavy rock crawling.

It’s not that far off to think that this concept could preview some styling direction for the 4Runner. That front end has many quantities of the fifth gen, modernized along the likes of the Tacoma. Edited to add photo of front end for comparison:

It's amazing how many models Jeep is pushing of crossover SUVs. They have the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Wagoneer coming soon. I'm not sure how efficient it is to make 5 different crossovers in the same basic market segment with 2 inch jumps between each model. Even Subaru doesn't have as many, and they have a lot of the same vehicle dressed up in different ways.

The new Wrangler does look promising. At least it's not a 10 year old design like Toyotas. The new Wrangler will have an all aluminum body. Completely modern interior and electronics. Apple and Android compatible. I would wait until 2019 to get one though cuz that is when the diesel option comes out. 443 ft. lbs of torque. Solid axles. Whats not to like? And just because it is not a Toyota doesn't mean it will leave you stranded. Really?:boom:

How is this biased? I have owned a Jeep and it was nothing but problems. Just go on the forums and you'll see a myriad of problems. Everything from electrical, cables, binding diffs, snapped axles..the list goes on and on. I owned that thing from 2014 and sold it this year. In that short 3 years, I was left stranded 8 times and had to be put on a flatbed tow truck 4 of those. If I didn't keep a 200 pcs tool box on me it would've been 8 times.
So where is your evidence that my statement is false and biased? I work in the off-road industry and this happens more than NOT.

jeep is consistently towards the bottom of reliability ratings and have one of the highest "time in shop" ratings for new vehicles.
the reason i went with a 4runner over a wrangler is because it's so much better on the highway and has a better payload capacity
(and i went with 4runner over the WK2 Grand Cherokee because of the reliability rating and how many problems people were having on the jeep message board)

Jeep is consistently at the bottom in reliability ratings, and there isn't much of an incentive for them to fix the issue, as people keep buying them because they control a segment of the market. Wish Toyota would develop a modern FJ40 to compete, and the FJ wasn't it.

Owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Dodge, and Chrysler. A complete and utter scam of a car company. Had the Dodge, learned a lesson. Got the Jeep thinking it was someone a step up and would be different. The Chrysler was not my decision but also taught my family a lesson. Never buy MOPAR. The cars are literally built to break.
Give me an "outdated" 4Runner that will need brakes one time for every three on the Jeep. Give me a car that will last 300k miles rather than just barely over the warranty time.
Yes this is my opinion, and is obviously bias, but to compare Toyota's reliability to MOPAR is like comparing a lion to a house cat.

My first car was a Mazda B2600i, essentially a Ford Ranger rebadged. In 10k miles of owning, transmission went out twice, head cracked (engine temp gauge did not work), 4wd linkage went bad. Since then I have only owned Toyotas. Collectively, I have driven close to 500k miles with them. Outside of the Takata issue, a frozen caliper on my 4th gen and a squeaky wheel bearing on a new Tacoma, never had one mechanical issue (FJ60 engine was staring to get loud on start up at 320k miles). MY FIL also is a Toyota nut, and currently owns a 2003 Tacoma with 400k miles (no issues), a 2004 Tacoma with 280k miles (no issues) and now a 2017 Tacoma (gutless, but no issues). I know Toyota isn't perfect, but they are built better than the competition (based on others experience on tacomaworld, I would not get the new tacoma right now though). I wouldn't hesitate to buy another 4Runner. Also, as I look back at each Toyota I have owned, I loved each one of them, and wish I could still own them all. I can't say that for any of my parents vehicles or my Mazda. And I will never own a MOPAR POS car.
Growing up my parents had a Dodge 600. Interior fell apart, brake system went bad, transmission went out, turbo went bad all at under 50k miles. They replaced it with a Chrysler Imperial. Brake system went bad, transmission went out, shifter column was replaced. Sold at 75k miles. Replaced it with a Lincoln Continental (hoping Ford would be better). Transmission went out, radiator leaked, under 60k miles. Replaced with a Maxima. 7 years later not one issue. They are now looking at the new Lexus RX. After years of prodding, they are Japanese vehicle converts.

It's a strong position but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's false. My JK went through a transmission, 2x clutches, starter, idler pulley, 3x stereos, 3 or 4x batteries, multiple tie rod ends, and had a leaking steering box and cracked radiator when I sold it at 60k miles. It had an electronic gremlin I called the "lightening bolt of death" that would kill the motor while driving, a red lightening bolt would flash on the dash. It happened multiple times on the freeway and each time the dealer checked it and said it was fixed. These are documented issues and my story is not uncommon.
I still love jeep's and am super excited for the new JL, but I'd never kid myself that they are reliable.
Edit: also had the gas tank replaced under recall/warranty after the sending line popped out at an intersection and dumped half a tank onto the road.

Sounds super familiar. My tranny was about to fail when I sold it and was super honest with the guy that bought it. I sold it for 15k and it was the cheapest JK in California at the time. It was also locked front and rear and only had 120k miles. My fuel pump went out. I broke track bar brackets, busted a bunch of bearings. Too many to list.
I have owned Jeeps also. Two of them. Both Rubicons. Never had any issue whatsoever. Just straight up reliable for many years and miles. I guess I should have clarified that I was talking about Wranglers. There are many more problems with the other models more so than the Wranglers in my opinion. I don't think I would ever consider owning any Jeep besides a Wrangler based on my previous experience with them. But I have never owned a JK and it sounds like they have had issues.

I would only own a pre JK nowadays. I did have the first year the JK came out and was pretty heavily modified. I was literally "just empty every pocket" myself with that wrangler. The motor was garbage as well..no power. I wish they kept those inline 6's. The TJ has so much more pep. I'll probably get another TJ after I am done building my T4R. I know for sure that it will be strictly for rock crawling.
I had 2015 GC with the 3.6l pentastar paired with the 8 speed transmission (apparently the same combination in the new JL's). The transmission is a design that FCA modified from the original ZF, and has known issues. When I lemon-lawed my vehicle with 20k mi on the clock, it was on its 4th transmission and 5th valve body. Enough of the GC's (and RAM's and Chryslers) had my particular malady that there are many long threads on multiple forums dedicated to it. I like the general design direction Jeep is taking with the new JL's; I wish they had excluded the 845RE transmission from their plans.
