I guess you will be owning a Jeep Wrangler in 2019 then cuz no way Toyota releases one here in the USA.

As Toyota never seems to stray far from its existing buckets of parts..
The redesigned Prado for 2018 still has the 6 speed auto and keeps the 4.0 dvvti gas engine.. with full time 4WD.
But as you Americans love your trees, won’t be surprised if the 3.5 makes its way in there

But those parts are so strong!.. We don't even have the 6-speed, we "keep it wild" with a fiver, then again we don't have gear hunting issues like Jeeps' 8-speeds so at least we got that going for us.

In my experience the 6 speed does a better job than the 5 for gear hunting. The reason is that all the gear ratios are the same, except you would start with probably 4.30 diffs. Like the other SUVs that use the 6AT. So the new 6th gear is close to our current 5th, but the jump down to 5th is much closer than the 5th to 4th in the current AT. And it'll just run in 5th a lot more often - but not jump around. It's not revved to the moon going 80mph in 5th gear like our 5AT is when it drops to 4th.
Combine it with a a 2.5L turbo 4cyl - and I'm sold.

Honestly actually never, but I meant it facetiously as well. I'll drive my brothers Jeep occasionally and it's constantly jumping gear but that's about it. I rest easy knowing the 4runner has a tried and true powertrain, my brother and I both had our share of transmission replacements with Jeep and Dodge products.

Let's hope that isn't the direction of the 6 gen. Unless Toyota is trying to appeal to the soccer moms. It has Lexus GX 470 writen all over it. Hate to say it, but if the 6 gen looks anything like that, I'll be buying a new Jeep Wrangler in the future.

Styling is so subjective. Even the 5th gen has love it or hate it styling. 99% of current 4Runner sales are to be used as soccer mom mobiles or mall crawlers (that’s what mine is used for 95% + of the time) since I live in American suburbia and have 2 kids which doesn’t allow me to “Overland” or “Rock Crawl” every weekend.
To be honest I was watching not for how it looked but for the features that will hopefully trickle down. There weren’t many that I saw that I was like “wow, I really wouldn’t like that in my 4Runner”.
If your intended use of the vehicle is rock crawling, then yes the Wrangler is a better platform (and actually better than the current 4Runner anyway). If it is to comfortably get you to a destination and then explore with bulletproof reliability that will get you home, there aren’t many vehicles that are better suited for that then the Landcruiser Prado. There is a reason why it sells so well in Australia and everywhere else in the world.

I guess I was hoping for a more muscular look as opposed to a Highlander look. Definitely agree with you on new and updated features. Seems like my wife's 16 Jeep GC is light years ahead on features. I understand where you are coming from, but you also have to understand where Toyota is coming from. Since most people who really off road it (or even if they don’t but want to look like they do) modify the heck out of thier vehicles anyway, just through an ARB bumper on the front and it will look something like this. But I completely agree that we won’t see anything until 2020/2021 anyway, after the new Sequoia and flagship Landcruiser are released.

For what it’s worth, this is my prediction:
Facelift in 2019, 6th generation in 2021/2022. I doubt the highly anticipated new truck global platform will be rolled out first in anything other than the top-of-the-line Land Cruiser, which won’t happen at least until 2020.
The 2019 facelift will include the safety features that the new 2018 Prado has, a new dashboard (perhaps with a few niceties), and a new grille (this is anybody’s guess though
Also, for what I have seen on some overseas markets, they will probably keep the 4.0 litter engine but give us a 6-speed transmission.
Overall, not too bad in my opinion. If they deliver this next year, I will jump and trade in my 2016; otherwise, I might just do a leap of faith and get a Rubicon JL. Just my 0.02.

I have no problem with that. The looks, luxury, and sophistication of a Lexus with the off-road prowess of a 4Runner. Whats not to like? Also a lot more people are using GX470's and 460's for off-roading because of those reason and because they're now more affordable as older used vehicles. I'm actually a big fan of the looks of the global vehicles much more than those used in the NA market and if they introduce a LC-Prado like vehicle as the 6th gen 4R with a few engine & powertrain choices I'll be trading in the 4R in a heart beat. Funny how some consider the LC Prado a "soccer mom" vehicle but in Australia it's an off-roading beast. Go figure. If it comes out in 2020/2021 even better, at least I'll have a few years to beat up the 4R and we'll likely see a Ford Ranger and/or Bronco by then.

GX is better built than the 4Runner, like for example the hood doesn't wobble at speed on the freeway and there is actual sound insulation in the body.
GX have always had all the off road features of the 4Runner.
GX is AWD in the US.
GX has V8 in the US.
GX has a substantially nicer interior.
GX is slightly roomier.
GX has massive aftermarket support, many Australian parts are modified from the GX for the 4Runner and FJC.
GX is overall better value than a fully optioned 4Runner, especially a Limited.

-4runner has better approach and departure angles and has an available rear locker on the trail or same ft fwd system of 460 on the limited.
-GX is heavier, has essentially the same 0 to 60 time even w a V8 due to the extra weight. And it gets worse mpg.
-We were going to sell our 4runner for the GX and were surprised that the interiors were pretty similar except for some fake wood. And the swing rear gate would suck. Mostly we were bummed at the similarity in off the line power.
Our limited 4runner has insulation under the hood. No vibration and pretty quiet. Adding dynamat is always an option too.
Gx doen not seen to have as much US aftermarket support, and getting aussie parts is expensive.
But the bolded quote is where I disagree most of all, at least with new vehicles. A GX is not a better value. It depreciates at a much higher percentage than the 4runner and the higher priced Land Cruiser.
I like the GX, but if I were buying new, a 4runner is definitely the overall better value. Our limited was around $40k new, and the 18s arent much higher. The cheapest GX I could find in 500 miles was $52k and lacked heated seats and Nav (cant negotiate much with lexus in my experience). The premium gx is $59 to $62. If I was shopping used, a GX starts looking like a great option. In casual browsing in my area, a 2012 gx460 premium listing prices are essentially the same as a 12 4runner.
